Many DOs dont use OMM for a number of reasons. Some feel they arent good at it, others dont think they have time and many think they wont get paid for it.
I have spoken to many DOs who are in family practice. One such DO comes to mind where he said he works in a private practice with an MD...same office, same office staff. The difference? The DO can perform and BILL FOR OMM. On average he makes (his own words...but when you do the math, it makes sense) $45,000 more a year than his partner. Medicare DOES pay for OMM. Insurances WILL pay for services (I know DOs who have called insurance companies and explained to them what they are doing and have gotten reimbursed). Does it cost the patient extra? No. Does it take more time? Not usually...most techniques can be done while taking a history or answering questions for patients...and your patients are happier because they feel that you are DOING something rather than just running down a checklist to get to an ultimate prescription. You get paid based on how many body areas you treat. So an average office visit (8-14 minutes) you can get paid and additional $20-$50 based on the OMM you perform. You see 4 patients an hour for 8 hours = $160.00 a day (at least) = $800.00 a week X 50 weeks = $40,000 a year. There's his $45,000 extra a year. Would you do OMM on every patient? Not necessarily. Woman who comes in for her regular diabetes check or liver enzyme levels may not need it. CHF/COPD pt...sure. Low back pain, headache, sinus infection, urinary tract infection...definately.
DOs who practice solely OMM are a different story. Many of them charge cash on an hourly basis. I have heard numbers from $80.00 an hour to $300.00 an hour. Average, at leat around here, is about $150.00 an hour/45 minutes. Do the math...almost $300,000 a year. Sounds like surgeon money...but your not paying surgeon malpractice premiums. 😉
Personally I know of one practitioner who makes close to $2,000,000 a year...2 million, thats right. Private practice OMM in a big city with a client base that can afford it and is willing to pay it and sees the benefit of services. Is this the average? Certainly not. Is it possible? Hell yeah, depending on the area and your reputation and how good you are.
Don't listen to anyone who says there is no money in OMM. They're probably the ones who had trouble in OPP lab as students. 😉
