So the largest insurance company in our region has recently sent out a memo stating that they will no longer cover SI joint injections. They are now considered experimental and we will have to bill the patient. Has this been going on in other locations? Should I alert the local/national pain societies? This is NOT a small insurance company by any means.

I would definitely alert all the pain societies you can think of. Similar to the noridian facet issue, you need to get all major pain players involved in a coordianted effort to stop ridiculous determinations like this from happening.

Highmark blue cross. Biggest insurance company in this area by far.

    absolutely ridiculous!!

I think SI joint pain is an often under thought of reason for LBP. I've seen great results from SI joint injections and RFA.

It was always SIJ until those pesky guys Mixter and Barr came along and published their article in NEJM 1934.
