Are dentists trained with a firearm? Also, i have heard of dentists also being trained as a pilot, but of course you have to stay in longer. Is this true anyone know of it. Also what about special forces. Is this a possibility?

Yes i know it sounds crazy to become a dentist then do special forces... but its something i would consider. Thanks

Check out CPT Jim Lussier's profile here. This why I considered Army but I went with Navy instead.

well...yes and no to the firearm. in the Navy, you can qualify and earn a ribbon for both 9mm pistol and M-16 rifle (or AR-15). so yes, you are 'trained' with a firearm. but given that dentists are not forward deployed, i doubt you would find many with any sort of sidearm. seeing as how i have not yet been at the tip of the spear, i dont know for sure.

i know that physicians that become flight surgeons (direct care for an air wing) are trained to fly down in Pensacola, but air wings do not have a dedicated dentist. they are cared for by either their shoreside clinic or the d-docs on the carrier/amphib. as for special forces, i have seen more than a few SEALs and river warriors, but none of them have asked me to join them. 😀

basically, the Navy has such a small dental corps, we cant be sending them to join the special forces. you have a job as a dentist and that requires some serious gear to do well...that doesnt really mesh well with the mission of the SEALs or RIVRON squadrons. its still pretty cool to do molar endo out in the middle of the ocean, though.

In the Army you will qualify with a 9mm pistol and carry it everywhere you go if you get deployed. If you are a part of a field unit you will probably be able to qualify with a M-16. Army special forces do have dentists assigned to their units, obviously they don't do all the crazy stuff, but do get the opportunity to do some training, airborne, etc. You are more likely to deploy more often but usually for shorter tours.

Never heard of a dentist being trained as a pilot though.
