SLU Class of 2008

So, who's coming to SLU next year? Good times, good times. Hopefully we'll get some SDN'ers up in here- good school, reputation is getting better (and will jump quite a bit in the next few years assuredly) and it's a fun place to be.

My favorite part about the school is the hospital network. Largest ER in all of Missouri and Illiniois, including Chicago. I've gotten sick a few times, and the treatment I get there is really amazing. Back in undergrad at Wash U, I was sick as well and had to go to BJC for some tests, and I definitely appreciated the care at the slucare (www.slucare.edu) network much more (and some other sickies I know said the same).

Anyways, it's all good. Long as you got wood.

Hey moops. Got a question for you. Whats up with that big ER and all the facilities... But (correct me if Im wrong here) no ER residencies? That was a downer to hear. Thanks

M

moops

i think it's wierd. almost everyone goes to BJC to do ER stuff and lots go to BJC for residency. i have a couple friends who are attendings over there who say they prefer slu for ER residents.

but.. yeah, its wierd that there is no ER residency, agreed.

wierd like an ass crack

I didn't get my acceptance letter for almost 4 weeks after my interview. I think you should throw back a cold one and wait (unless they expressly told you would be contacted in 2 weeks). :)

Interviewed there on the 14th of October, got my acceptance about two and a half weeks later:clap:. I loved the people there, and I'm really getting excited about the possibility of being there. I'm not making any declarations until May about where I'm going, but there's a very, very strong possibility I'll be there.

Got my acceptance today-woooohoooo! :D

Two in a row! Yesterday I got my first one from Loyola, and today I got the SLU acceptance. Tough decision ahead of me.

Moops-I'm going to PM you.

edit: your box is full!

M

moops

hey- sorry- i dont' know what's going on with my PM box... i have a lot of my stuff deleted and not much in there- maybe someone can tell me what to do? anyways- i have decent experience with both schools (and a lot with one!) heh- anyways, as a bystander, i would say that slu and loyola are very similar in many ways. for those who love chicago, loyola is probably the way to go. st. louis, for me, is a better city than chicago because it is more navigable and it's easier to have a car (and i like having a car a lot)- in addition, they are of similar repute, but slu is going to quickly pass that in the next couple years (there is a 100 percent chance of this)- i know that is shallow, but again it's important to recognize that it plays a role in everyone's decision- well, practically everyone.. then again, i would say an even bigger factor is where you want to end up, and a lot of people, as i mentioned, love chicago, and if you love chicago, then go to loyola no questions asked- great facilities, good education, similar pricetag... so...yeah...

anyways, if you want, just post your question on here until i can get my PM thing fixed, i guess a lot of peopel have been trying to PM me-

hope all is well and good luck in making a decision. (PS, where are you leaning towards?)

Moops, Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, one of the reasons that this decision is so hard is that Loyola, SLU, and Creighton are all so similar, and they are the schools I've interviewed at!

Anyway, I PMed you earlier this year about my peculiar interview at SLU with Dr. Westerman. I also don't feel like I got to see as much of SLU as I would have liked-I didn't see anatomy labs, work out/recreation facilities, or have the chance to talk to many students. I was wondering if they have a second look weekend? If not, I live in St. Louis, so I was wondering if I could meet you there some time, and I could look around? If you don't want to do that, I understand, I just thought I could ask (ps-I'm not a psycho! ;) ).

Also-are most of the students there as happy as you are? What's student life like there?

Thanks, jdg

Hey Redeemed,

Thanks! I interviewed on November 18, so they took about a month to get back to me-not too bad of a wait. Most people had a pretty relaxed interview experience, but mine was a little strange. Have you applied to SLU? If so, good luck, and PM me or post here if you have any more questions.

Checking back with all us SLU peeps. So what do you guys think? Who's going for sure? Who thinks they are? I am pretty sure I'm going, but not completely sure. I just want to know what everyone else is thinking.

For those accepted to SLU, how long did they take to decide post-interview. I interviewed dec 22 and still no word. I called them and they said they're running a bit behind. I am getting kinda impatient.

I got in back at the end of October and haven't heard a single thing from them since, regarding financial aid, housing, curriculum or anything. It's actually a bit annoying... The one other place I got into so far has contacted me a good four or five times with financial aid info, computer stuff, congratulations, etc....

Does anyone know where most of the SLU students live? I know some of the students on the tour said they live near WashU and almost everyone has a car. Any help would be appreciated.

I might end up living in the Central West End because it is closer to the school and even though it is somewhat more expensive, you don't have to worry so much about the weather when you are getting to school.

I'm not to impressed with that web site if you plan on living in the Central West End or other areas of the city. It seems geared toward the St. Louis County which is a separate entity than St. Louis City which is treated as a county on its own. Long story. Anyhow, the suburbs of the county are VERY safe and might suit anyone well. Living in the CWE is alot closer, more night life, and closer to other areas where things are happening like Washington Avenue district in downtown, the Landing in downtown, Soulard, the Loop, and Forest Park to name some things.

Try mstl.org for a listing of rentals if you are interested. You're best bet is to actually go to stl if you can and check out the area if you can but that is unlikely for many out of staters. I live in a 1300sq ft 2bd, 1 loft, 1.5 bath unit in a 4 unit rehabbed 1800s era row house in Soulard and pay only $900. My share of rent is $208 for the loft. The area is full of young professionals. Anyhow, again keep in mind there are other places not on that list. Many of you will move your second year anyways.

Good luck

I just got accepted!!! Wooooohooooo! 2 week turnaround time, they're pretty quick. I'm not sure if I'll be going there but am definately interested. For those of you that were accepted, do you know if the deposit is refundable prior to May 15th if you decide not to go? Maybe I'll see you all in August, who knows. :D

Thanks for all the responses.

ZekeMD, congrats. I thought SLU had the shortest waiting period between interview and decision...mine was a bit longer at 3 weeks. Still...it feels like a second when other schools take months to decide.

It seems like everyone hears from SLU post-interview quickly; i interviewed in dec 22; still no word. I called them couple of weeks ago, they said they're running a bit behind and that no decison was made on me yet. Should I call them again and ask?

Yeah, I was accepted to Stony Brook the day after I received the SLU acceptance. Now I'm in a bind. I loved SLU, but didnt like the area. I felt the same way about Stony Brook. The thing that has me leaning towards SB is the cost. It would be very cheap for me to go there....being a NY resident.

So anyone else pretty sure they will be at SLU next year? I'm looking into apartments near Forest Park (Central West End). Just wondering where the other incoming M1's are looking at?

For everyone looking for apartments, the SLU website has an updated housing website by the class of 2007. I think the old site was by the class of 2004 or something. Anyways I think it's pretty useful. Anybody heard from them about the required immunizations/physical?

Just a couple of days ago I received a mail from SLU regarding the required immunizations/physical exam. It also includes the schedule for the upcoming year and other info.

longlakeboy, chintu...so have you guys found a place yet? I haven't even really started looking except for the housing website. Can't believe school is starting in a little over a month? Are you guys going to go to all the extra orientation activities?

Yeah, I'm planning on going to that orientation stuff.

As far as housing, I haven't looked all that hard. I'm going to start emailing these places, but I won't be going down there until I'm actually moving there.

Starting in just a month, it's crazy...

yea guys. Just in a month. I was as shocked as you guys, but pretty excited to be at a new place with new classmates. I too haven't looked all that much. I think I'll go to all the required activities plus a few fun things if I can. I think adjusting to the new place will take up quite a bit of my time considering that the school starts right after the orientation activities are done. Hope to see you guys soon and enjoy the rest of the summer!

It looks like I'm going to be at SLU as well this fall. :) I've been looking into the CWE but haven't visited St. Louis since the interview. Were there any special move-in deals going on? I'm hoping to find a roommate and get a 2bed/2bath.

Hey Everybody!

I'm packin' my bags for Saint Louis too! I'm so stoked and so excited.

I've been looking into housing and am open to options. I've tried to get on SLU's houseing exchange forum a couple of times, but repeated e-mails to the people there have resulted in silence. (Even e-mails where I wrote " Please write back so I know you got this") *shrug*.

If anybody is looking for a roommate, or can give me info on the housing forum, PM Me or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Just a little about me
1) I love air conditioning.
2) I eat Atkins.
3) I listen to all types of music, except 'old' country
4) I'm a dude.

Yeah.. so that's what I've got to offer for the roommate situation.
