Hi everyone, a little background: I will be starting my MHA (Masters of Health Administration) this Fall. I applied to 6 schools, and gained acceptance to 5, and whittled my choices down to 2.

At this point I am trying to decide between Tulane University and Saint Louis University. Both schools have strong programs (although SLU is ranked much higher by US News.) I like the city of St. Louis, and while I also like New Orleans it seems to be a really rough place to live these days, and there are some possibly silly concerns on my part (ie: nightlife is sort of weak, outside of getting drunk.) The cost of living is also much higher, if you want to live in a safe/safer area. Tulane has more of a "name", but I suspect that a school as highly ranked and as old as SLU will have cache in the health care world. My biggest concern is the "mobility" of the degree--it is important that I am able to utilize the degree in any part of the country, especially the East coast (where I currently reside), and I don't know if one school would be better over the other in that regard.

I was wondering if anyone here was attending/has attended/is familiar with either of these schools. I'd love any feedback on the cities, schools, programs, advice, praise, warnings, etc.

Thanks! 😀

Hello SpecailBlend! 🙂

SLU's program is very strong from what I hear; St. Louis is kinda rough too, from what I hear regarding crime, etc. BUT every place has crime, no matter where it is....I heard that SLU developed some kind of healthcare management teaching model or something and that it has gotten praise from CAHME, I think...With Tulane, I don't know much about it except that fact that their program is also very good....The ball is in your corner.....i've heard people say that New Orleans might be a little safer, or so I've heard......

SLU and Tulane are good schools....You probably can't go wrong but I like SLU (that's me though....)

I too will be pursuing my MHA this fall; I narrowed my choices down between Indiana University (IU) and George Washington University (GWU)

I wanted to go to GWU very much but declined b/c of the cost of living, very expensive, and I didnt' get much money.....IU was cheaper, and I got more money, plus it offers more of what I have a personal interest in--- health informatics...Both IU and GWU have clout but I chose what would benefit me the most financially, etc........

You can't go wrong between SLU and Tulane, ball's in your corner...Good luck 🙂

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, that's the tricky thing--both schools are really good and I can't go wrong, I suppose, but there's always a "What if..." kind of feeling. I think I am leaning towards Tulane because there are a lot of unique opportunities in NoLa, and I don't think I'd ever want to live in NoLa in the long term but at my age and reponsibility level I think it could be a pretty fun time. Also, Tulane gave a me a scholarship, which was a nice surprise, and SLU has yet to offer my any substantial aid. Like you, I will ultimately choose what is most financially comfortable.

I also considered GWU--applied and got in, but I just didn't feel it was a good fit. I live in the area, and want to move; DC and the surrounding counties are so stupidly expensive, not just rents but everything is overpriced; the school is too expensive and required 3 years as opposed to 2 years; most classes are at night; and, really, I just had bad gut feeling about the place. GWU seems kinda greedy, but it is a good school.

Good luck with everything! IU is a great school.

Hello SpecialBlend! 🙂

I didn't like the fact that GWu was 3 years instead of 2 years (that was too darn long for me, 3 years! YUCK!! 😱

Anyway, IU is 2 years and I feel excited about it! 🙂 Good luck with everything and you can PM if you wish!

dude..
new orleans is the place to go.. i just graduated from Tulane, and I wish I was still in new orleans!!!!!

ditto prev post about NOLA. great place to live past 4 years during medical school, sorry to leave. don't worry about not having a nightlife...

I got an admit to Tulane. I am waiting to hear from Minnesota.
One of the question I have is, what are the good and safe places to live if I choose Tulane MPH ? Wheat are the typical places MPH sudents reside ?
How are the uni. dorms ?
I will appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

I had to make a decision between BU, SLU, Drexel, Tulane, and GWU. For me it came down to BU vs. Tulane... and I picked Tulane inspite of currently living in Boston and loving it there and concerns about security in NOLA. I just felt driven to go to Tulane somehow.

I've applied to live in Deming which is school-housing and I'm hoping to get a studio there. It seems safest and most convenient to the school since I don't have a car and don't know much about NOLA public transportation AND am coming right of living in school housing for the past 4yrs of undergrad.

PM me to let me know what you decide... if you decide on Tulane we should have a little SDN reunion or something no?
