What is y'all's take on the SMEP summer program for minorities. Though I'm not an URM (since i'm asian we're over represented), I still think it'd be a good experience as well as helpful on the application since I plan to do it at UVA and plan to attend UVA if I can get it as well. Do you guys think it's worth? Plus there is a $800 stipend and $200 travel fee hehehe. 😀

i went in the summer of 2003 at uab. i also got into the program at uva and nj, but alabama seemed like it would be a better experience. i loved it. you learn a lot about the school, what its like to be in medical school, and medicine in general. the experience offered some great experiences that have made for interesting conversation topics in interviews. definitely apply. oh yea, im also asian and im from cali but the programs were still willing to take me.

very true it is for minorities or disadvantage..so if you feel either of the two go for it, the worse they can say is NO GET THE HELL OUT 🙂 Seriously though, you see my pic <<<< dont look like no minority hmm? yeah but got some freaky past stories and such, that make me at a disadvantage state, so I applied to HCOP at Stanford and got in 🙂. I applied for SMEP last year with no luck...but that could have been the time I put into it.

i attended a summer research program 2 summers ago and i had the time of my life. it's especially helpful to you if you attend one at a med school that you want to attend. the whole time you're there you're making contacts and getting good research experience, which can only help you. plus you get paid, and a lot of them offer free travel and free housing...mine also offered an extra $1000 for food. what's not to like 🙂
