So Glad I Found This Site (Literate NPs!!)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I prefer dealing with adults.

So Zen Magic doesn't work with kids? Can they see through the Zen Smoke?? Perhaps they are not so desperate that they believe the Zen charade and rely on true medicine??

Of course, I merely practice medicine, so forgive me my questions about all that fancy "Zen" stuff that you are the expert in.

Works very well with kids. However, I was saying I prefer dealing with adults, rather than you. You will grow up at some point I suppose.

Of course you merely practice medicine and have only one tool in your tool box. Business school taught me better than than approach. So this is what your mantra is based on:

According to Dr. John Ioannidis - world's foremost expert on credibility of medical research:

90% of published medical information that we rely on is false
80% of non-randomized (most common) studies turn out to be wrong
25% of gold-standard randomized trials are wrong
10% of platinum-standard trials are wrong

Sad, actually.

Mindfulness might benefit you. Start here: Jon Kabat-Zinn at http://www.umassmed.edu/content.aspx?id=43102

Mindfulness helps me a lot in my work treating soldiers on an infantry post. I run an acute care clinic in the mornings and I'm the provider everyone sends angry patients to. I'm the only one that never requires an escort standing by. Perhaps it's my calm demeanor or maybe angry people see the picture of me with a tiger on my desk and decide I can handle them.

I also teach medical Qi Gong weekly at the Army's Functional Restoration Program, a program for people who have obtained no relief from your medicine. (That's ancient Chinese exercises in case you don't know). If you want to talk with the director there about how popular my class is let me know and I'll put you in touch with him.

In any case enjoy your one tool.

Perhaps when they see you with a tiger pic they calm down because they realize all hope is lost. Kind of like an "oh ****, I didn't die in Iraq so the military is finishing me off with this guy."

What a crude response. I can't help but laugh at premeds and med students telling zenman, someone with decades of experience, what to do.

Wow, over a year later I forgot I even wrote this thread lol.

Just an update: I ended up doing the NP route. I moved to go to a top ranked NP program and have been very impressed with the level of detail in my physiology and pathophysiology classes. We use medical school textbooks and are responsible for knowing and applying everything covered in the textbooks. I'm learning a ton.

That being said, im very annoyed by the focus on research and other "fluff" classes. Those classes teach me nothing related to patient care and are basically just busy work. Considering the cost per credit and time I'm spending on those courses, I'd rather taking more science or clinical courses instead.

Lastly, I did end up finding a better forum than allnurses. I became more and more disgusted with that biased website the more time I spent there (they are funded by for profit nursing schools) and ended up googling for something else. I found the NP Forum (npforum.net) in case anyone else is interested. Sometimes it doesn't seem too active but its a good group of people and I'm glad it exists now.

Anyway, sorry to revive a dead thread 😛

Congrats, RedCole! I'm curious to hear where you attend (maybe PM me if you're open to it)? What year are you in the program?
