So I got a letter from the Army...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I worked with an anesthesiologist (sp?) this summer that served in the air force. He loved it!!! If I was going to go into anything, it'd be the air force. He spent time with his family throughout the whole thing. He was kind of a family doctor for the families of 5 fighter pilots. He said that he rode in F-16's at least twice a week. That'd be awesome!!!
He was most likely jerking your chain, Studs. Even Flight Surgeons, who have a minimum number of flight hours they are supposed to hit, have difficulty lining up the rides they need each month. I can't imagine how low on the list an anesthesiologist would be.

Also, the vast majority of F-16's, if I remember correctly, are single seaters.

I'm not a non-military civilian, but I don't like the fact that you're making it sound like "Oh don't worry, you won't get hurt.". I served quite proudly. I just don't wish to see anyone make the mistake of enlisting into a corrupt, disorganized and soul-crushing organization that is the military medical system.

Most are, but there is a 2-seater variant....I believe it's used for ECM and training.

Yeah, the B and D. But they're more rare and I doubt very much they're lined up on the tarmac to give anethesiologists free flights twice a week. Gotta cry bull$hit.

I just got a letter from the Army saying congratualtion for your acceptance to medical school...I am hoping that bodes well for Oct. 15 😱
Yes, I laughed when I saw that line... I'm hoping it means some of the school I haven't interviewed with have accepted me already 🙂

Can we all just agree that joining the service just for the money is much like becoming a doctor just for the money? If it's not something you really want to do, then you shouldn't do it.

Actually, I know several doctors who went into it just for the money and are pretty happy with their practices. I know very few HPSP scholarship folks who went in just for the free tuition that aren't griping now.

I've been in an F-16 squadron, so I can actually address this point: each one has a few "family models." Our flight surgeons never had trouble getting rides... but I'm afraid I never heard of a doctor from the hospital group getting one.

Too right. Pursuing a medical career for the money is perfectly legitimate and can lead to happiness. You don't have to love your job. I've worked at things that were "tolerable" and was perfectly happy as long as I thought I was making decent money.

Agreed. Dermatology is one of the highest paying specialties with one of the best lifestyles. It is also one of the most competitive. I'm sure some folks go in to it for the love of all things skin, but I have to feel that most applicants are applying with visions of money on one hand and hours in the office on the other.
