So by May 15th you have to notify schools of which you want to attend and which you don't. What does it mean, if someone has an acceptance and still on a waitlist do they notify the school they want to go but they are waiting on a waitlist or what?

Does May 15th mean that no student will be holding more than one acceptance?

How long does it take for the school's to get moving after the May 15th results?

After May 15, no applicant should have more than one acceptance.

Applicants typically "notify" schools by filling out the form and sending them money. No need to tell them if/where they are waitlisted.

Applicants are allowed to hold an unlimited number of waitlist spots.

Who knows how long it will take...that is likely very school dependent.

By May 15th you withdraw from all schools to which you have been accepted except one. You can continue to be on as many waitlists as you please. However, if you come off the waitlist (ie are accepted) you only have a short time to decide whether to keep the acceptance you have or accept the new one. Schools only find out about schools you are actually accepted to, except nearer the beginning of classes when scholols warn eachother if they are going to try to 'take' candidates (it's in the AAMC rules at least).

Schools vary in how fast they start moving after May 15th.

Hi geldrop.

By May 15th, you have to decline all of your acceptances except the one school you intend to enroll in. I believe you can still be on waitlists at other schools, but am not sure, so don't quote me on that one. As far as waitlist movement after May 15th, I guess it would depend on the individual school.......from what I have read on SDN, it seems to be pretty fluid after this date. Good luck!

Actually, you won't have recieved financial aid from the schools by May 15th, so it really isn't a drop all the schools but one date. What it should be is drop all the schools you wouldn't consider if you don't get a full ride.

So what about Canadians? I have an acceptance at an American school and this whole May 15 thing is really irritating me... no Canadian school will have even made an admissions decision by then! Its more like the end of June! (actually, I even have an interview on the 12th...)

So how does this apply to me? If I dont turn down my US acceptance by the 15, but then get into a Canadian school in June, what happens? Till when can you still turn down a US school acceptance?

Thanks for the help.

jalby, are you sure that's right? it is my understanding that you must withdraw acceptances from all schools but 1 by may 15th (but can be on as many waitlists as you like) even if you don't have FA info. one school told us an anecdote about how someone they had accepted was holding 5 other acceptances a week after may 15th, so they rescinded their offer.

bighead, you can hold onto that one u.s. acceptance for as long as you want. they don't know if you are looking at canada, are on other u.s. waitlists, etc.. you can withdraw from the u.s. school at a later date if you get into a canadian school.

From pg 48 MSAR:
May 15th is the deadline for acceptance deposit refunds and for applicants? final decisions about medical schools; after May 15, schools can require applicants to choose.

It goes on to say that AAMC expects schools to notify applicants of fin. Aid info by the 15th?.right.🙄

I asked several schools about this as I was waiting on FA offers - most said they would allow you to get an extension beyond May 15th for *their* FA offer, but they wouldn't allow you an extension for another schools FA offer - which translates to, you can pretty much only hold two offers beyond May 15th if you are waiting on the FA deal from BOTH and get both to agree 🙄

essentially that means May 15th is the deadline.

Schools can ask you to choose, but they don't. Last year tons of people held on to 2-3 schools that they couldn't decide on until they recieved financial aid. Schools were totally understanding. But once it get's closer to the actual start date and financial aid is sent out, you should only have one acceptance at a time. Most acceptances given at that time give you 24-48 hours to decide weather to accept or reject the acceptance (acceptances given off the waitlists)

This link is to the AAMC page regarding "RECOMMENDATIONS"concerning Medical School Acceptance Procedures. It seems to me that these are very loosely based and schools treat the May 15th deadline in their own way. Some schools may treat it as a definite deadline and others may not.

Check out the link and let me know what you think.

I also thought that #9 was very interesting. I think we've all heard stories of people arriving at one school and then getting accepted to their choice school last minute. I guess these AAMC suggestions don't carry much weight.

How much time do schools give you to decide whether or not to accept after pulling you from the waitlist?

i think after may 15th is may 16th

69 <- kinda drunk and being a jackass.

As big a date May 15 is for people on waitlists, it really does not mean people on waitlists are going to hear anything even close to that date. It just means waitlist movement will start to really pick up after that date.

May 15 is more of a big day for those with multiple acceptances because they need to make up their minds, which I wish they could just do right away.

right on solidgold...
