I'm a predent student doing a bachelor of science program and i was just thinking of the risk of what could happen if i dont get accepted into any dentistry schools later after im done with my bachelors.

What options do i have....jobs i could do?....could i reapply easily or am i screwed over? or should i just not really worry about this right now ...or at all?

Well what exactly is your major? Just a general science major? ... You can always re-apply to school's..I think you can 3 times.

Just bust your butt while getting your undergrad (Maintaining a high gpa)
And take the DAT and score good..If you need to after graduating predent, take a few months off and just study study study, so you will do good on the DAT..

Dont worry about it too much. Just worry about doing good right now in undergrad.

thats my opinion.

Best of luck, youll be fine. 👍

so i can do a science master's program or post bacc and reapply to dentistry??

by the way i forgot to mention, its a real must for me that i get into dentistry...but im just seeing my options here

thanx alot ELo , that's pretty much what im doing , killing myself now so that ill get in easily hopefully, and im majoring in biology in my bachelors...i read it's what dentistry schools like most.

but thanks again, ill try not to worry about it right now

I was premed but switched at the last minute so I had a year or two to kill before going predent...right now I am doing research for MS....its a good option...you really hone your manual dexterity skills. I am thinking that dentals schools will like the background you aquire (well, atleast we will see!)

would a mph improve an application at all? i'm also worried about getting in this cycle. the general trend seems to be that people get a ms in biomedical sciences (or something related), but i'm more interested in a mph.

I would imagine it would help for a school like ASDOH, which strongly advocates public health.

But I wouldn't do that unless I truly believed in ASDOH's system and would do it even if I wasn't going to apply to ASDOH. Don't do all the "community work" just to put it on AADSAS for ASDOH.

I hope I made sense. Just my 2 cents.

True. If it were me I would go for the standard biomedical sciences.

how do you switch from premed to predent.....or better yet, how would i know which am i doing.. i just thought it was a bachelor of science 😕

How far do you have to finish your B.S. if you don't know what major you are in? There is no diff b/w pre-dent and pre-med as far as getting a bachelor of science or anything else. Pre-reqs to dental and mdical schools are the same for the most part. The only diff is the entrance exam (DAT vs. MCAT).

to be honest, I don't even underestand what you are asking. You don't have a bachelor, you have not taken the test (DAT I assume) and you have not even applied. Why are worried about not getting in!!! getting where?

Apply to a graduate school and get your M.A in something you enjoy.

If that's your thing, that is.

no i said i was majoring in biology because that's what alot of dentistry schools want.. and i'm still in the 1st year, but i was just wondering if (god forbid) i dont get in to any dentistry schools after my 3 years of majoring in biology

That is not true. You can major in anything you want. In fact, dental schools prefer that students major in something other than hard sciences. They want you to do well in your non-science major, all the pre-reqs and some higher level science courses, hence all of this means a tougher course load.

So what? Find out why you were denied admission and reapply with a much more improved application the following year, i.e. retake DAT, research, apply early, etc...
Reapplying with an improved application will indicate your dedication to pursue dentistry as well.

I applied more than once and made my application better the second time around. I retook the DAT and did a MS in Human Genetics and did well in the program and now I am a third year dental student. If you want to be a dentist there are always ways to make yourself look better and get in to school. Just work hard.

Just a side note, the dean of admissions at UNLV mentioned during her presentation about statistics and stuff on interview day that they actually like people who are bio (or other science) majors because they have taken upper level science courses. I guess if you do that as well as another major, you'll be fine. And, that's only for UNLV.

I'll second this for Baylor. They practically don't interview nonscience majors.

I don't agree at all about what you said regarding dental school prefer students major in something other than hard sciences. I doubt they find someone with a finance degree that completed science pre-reqs a good candidate for dental school. A lot of dental schools value research and so they are continually searching for innovative minds. It makes no sense to suggest someone to go for non-science major and take pre-reqs and then go and take a few upper level science courses. Upper level science draws knowledge from other science courses beyond pre-reqs.

Also if you're a first year, the common advise is to keep your GPA above a 3.5 and try your best to do well on DAT the first time. You want to do real well the first time, because beyond the third time, it looks real bad on the application, even if you do well the 4th time, the chance is definitely slimmer than doing well the first time (duh!).

As far as what major, if you are worry about not getting into dental school and end up with a degree that can't get you a job (biology can get you jobs in research, but it's not something most people would look for), then you might want to look into engineering. You might have a lower GPA from engineering but it's more valuable than a biology degree, and the admission knows this. The bottom line is to major in science and do undergrad research.

Im in my fourth application cycle....completing MS in biology in the spring..

If you want to do it, you can

im a re-applicant who had interviews everytime i applied....but if theres something (eg:becoming a dentist) that you REALLLLLLY wanna do then never give up on it. you can get a masters after graduation. i work in a research lab as the head specialist. just keep plugging away and your dream WILL come true!

This is kind of vague. How many times have you applied and how many interviews did you have each time? If you were qualified enough to get let's say 4 interviews each time, then you need to figure out what you're doing wrong in your interviews. I understand how competitive getting into dental school is, and just because you have 4 or 5 interviews does not mean you are guaranteed a spot; but I would think after a couple application cycles and multiple interviews something negative is standing out besides stats...
