I'm currently a dent. school applicant and an avid reader of this forum. As I'm preparing for interviews, I've come up with a couple questions that I'm unsure of how to answer. I was hoping that you bright future dentists could offer me some guidance.

1. The need for dentists will increase in general, but will the demand for dentists shift more towards the increase in general practitioners or specialists? If specialists, which one would you predict to be in the greatest demand?

2. What is currently the hottest technological advancement in dentistry? What kind of technology/research seems to be the most promising for the future of dentistry?

Lastly, I was wondering if you guys could offer me any internet resources that might address some questions about dentistry that I've mentioned. I find ADA.org a little too general and ADEA somewhat political.

Thank you all very much for your help.

1. Do what you love, the money will come... even as a "lowly" gp.

2. You will never be asked this question in an interview, but I would say implants are popular. Also biomaterials... the ablility to restore teeth with materials that mimic enamel's structure, stem cell stuff, etc...

I've noticed that there has been an increase in what gps provide-- leading to a decrease in the need for specialists. This has been due to better technology for the most part (simpler implant systems, rotary endodontics, invisalign braces). There will always be a need for specialists but I'm not sure if that need is increasing. I do know that there is a shortage of pedodontists in the country. In rural locations, there is a shortage of everything.
