That schools might not be offering me interview invites because i wrote in my PS that i volunteered at a dental school that is near my home. But that is only because I live next to it and I wanted to experience what dental school was like. I thought it shows interest... I see ppl with same and even lower stats than mine get invites who submitted same time (July 3rd)
I'm so sad now.. could that be the case, schools think that that school is my #1 choice & they r like "forget her then!" :(
If anyone can give me feedback or wants to read my PS, or has any advice of what to do.. please let me know..

uh oh... spaghettios.

I wouldn't worry too much about where you volunteered, I don't think most schools would hold that against you, and if they did than it's not somewhere you'd want to be anyways. I think it has more to do with your AA and GPA, both are slightly on the low side. Some people might get in with lower stats, but there's other factors besides numbers. I hope you get in this cycle, but if you don't, than maybe retake the DAT and shoot for 20+, and maybe remove instances of how you volunteered at that other dental school if it bothers you that it might be the reason you're not getting interviews.

I really don't think that your situation could harm your chances in any way!! You did the right thing. I am sure your experience helped you and putting it in your PS was a great idea. I would have done the same thing. The thing is, as we have heard over and over..there isn't a magical GPA, DAT, or preference of EC's. I have seen some crazy stats turned down at UCSF (for ex) and I couldn't believe my eyes..but you just have to remember, you don't have control of the situation now and you did the best you could. Best of luck! It will work out, just have a little faith.

You know what? I can tell you if it's your personal statement if you shoot it over to me via pm. Completely your choice. Getting into dental school is easy. If you know how the game's played. And was this school next to where you life UCSF?

FYI, you're supposed to do work for nearby schools. There's little sense in going to a far away school to do work.

Ait this is starting to scare me now lol. Look your stats seem average. Ur GPA seems okay. You need to boost ur DAT score and a 16 is not acceptable. Ur extra carrics are really GOOD. to be frank i have like only 50 hours of shadowing lol. I just dont have the time for it lol. Def. improve ur DAT score. Gluck on ur Test on Wed. Just go in there and nail it. GLUCK

If I lived close to a dental school. I would be there doing the same thing as you! Take advantage of a great opportunity and don't think twice about it.

nah, there is no problem with that. I did research at the dental school in my hometown, but I still got interviews at all the texas schools. I dont think that effects them. And I actually talked to the people at Baylor about it because I am from Houston but I really enjoyed my time there in Dallas so I wanted to know that it wouldn't hurt my chances that I'm from houston. The dean of admissions assured me that they chose the best qualified and then its their decision whether to come or not. aka where you are from/connections/ties to another school does not affect your offers.

to the OP i stated in my PS that i've worked for my school's dental school. I really don't think they like... hold it against you why would they? it jus shows them ur are really serious about the career. i've got 7 interviews so far and i reallly dont' think it hurt my chances either. infact, i think it actually helped me? don't worry about it you'll get an interview soon =)

Not acceptable? From what adcom school are you from? Have you taken the DAT yet? Then you really can't comment if you haven't. If a Dent school will not accept or will not interview me based on the 16 I'll tell them to go **** themselves.

For some reason, BU and Tufts are taking a little longer, so hang in there :)

What sucks is my state has no state dental school, so it kinda sucks and im getting irritable lol

Good luck taking your test on Wednesday! I had a 16 on my QR and most of the schools i called and asked told me that it was fine even if they had cut offs for each section. so try to focus more on the science and i think you'll be able to score some interviews! Good luck!

well its ind of like mine "doesn't either" Cause chances of getting into UCSF or UCLA for a CA resident are slimmer than getting into a state school from another state, I feel. I wish my state school was NOT of the top ones...
What state r u from? Alaska? lol jk

if i'm not reading it wrong for interviews: UCSF instate = 152, out = 72 and UCLA instate = 106, out = 24 from last year.

advantage for instate.

not at all.. just that they got my app and it is complete... I think they are a lot slower than the rest of the US.. judging by the # of invites off predents... i might be wrong though

when I was considering whether or not to stay in CA..one of the deciding factors was that I would be competing with a whole lot of people for very competitive state schools (cost of living too). I ended up moving back to FL and I'm pretty glad I did because I feel like I have a better shot at Nova or UF than I did with UCSF and UCLA. I feel ya.

No im not. I have not taken the real thing but i have taken one practice test (and yes that probably gives me no right to speak). Mind you i got a 22+ on every section except orgo which i got a 15 (bare in mind that i havent even completed orgo I). But scoring below the national average does raise a flag. Im sorry if you took it personally, but it was not ment to offend anyone (and i am sorry if i did). But i felt that if the person in question were to raise a below average score to, or better yet above, the national average their chances of acceptance will rise twofolds. "If a Dent school will not accept or will not interview me based on the 16 I'll tell them to go **** themselves." You do understand these schools have to pick appx. 100 students from a pool of 2000 or so? You have been on this forum long enough to comprehend the level of compatition that comes with it.

What I'm saying is say hypothetically, someone has an AA of 21. If they are getting rejected based on a 16 in QR, then that is bullsh*t. I speak for myself and others who have good TS and ****ty QR, especially with it being rediculously unfair

I did research at Pitt dental school and I put that on my app and it hasn't affected me because I've been invited for 9 interviews so far. Like you said, it shows dedication and any school would be stupid to hold that against you in my opinion.

I understand where you are coming from. But keep in mind, if they compare 2 students and they both have AA of 21 and one has a 16 in one subject and the other has nothing less then a 18. ( im no adcom, and there alot more variables that take part in this) I would put my money on the person with a 18. And yes i understand ur frustration i felt that way in highschool taking the SAT. English is my second language and the reading comprehension seemed impossible to me lol. I would check with the schools you applied to, check and see if they are missing anything or if they want anything from u. I can say with confidence that your scores will get u into dschool. Just give it time. Gluck.

Yup pali. My parents sorta dropped me off overseas and i learned english at like 9 or 10 years old lol. Same here, i got near perfect in math on the SAT perfect in math on the ACT, but the reading comp. lol it was such a pain in the a** lol. but i got it together read like 7000+ pages in the summer of my sophmore year, and scored really good in the end 700 or so. just be patient cuzin and time will tell.

I don't know about you but for me having my pens dry out, having such a large tip marker, having 15 Trig problems, time constraints, whatever...It was the section I thought I would do well on, based on my grades in all the math classes I have taken in highschool and in college, all the standardized state tests and SATs I have taken. Nothing I can do now, I'm just happy my AA is still a 20
