Michigan State University
Verbal: 8, PS: 8, BS: 11
GPA: 3.78

A good amount of experience, shadowing, backpacked around Europe, Registrar in emergency room, volunteer work, clinical research, member of various clubs, science TA

I just recently spoke with one of my professors and he is sure that I need to not apply this year and just wait and apply for the class of 2007. He said that I wouldn't even receive secondaries from most schools. He also said that if I get rejected from a school, it will hurt my chances from ever getting accepted if I end up having to apply again next application process. What is everyone else's opinion? Do you think that I will have a shot of getting some interviews if I turn in my application today or tomorrow? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Okay, this is the thing....you'll receive secondaries....that's a guarantee because the schools want the money and will send you the secondaries and expect you to return them until the deadlines (anywhere from December to February). See AAMC for more details on this matter. And I think you should go ahead and apply but make sure your LORs are in the bag and are ready to be sent out. I know some guy who missed the secondary deadline, han delievered it to the school and managed to get an interview, waitlist and acceptance last year....lucky prick. But that kinda **** happens like once in a blue moon. It would have been nice if you could have had it in earlier but still worth a shot.

I think your MCAT is decent, your GPA is good, so you have a good shot. Best of luck.

Hey, i'm at MSU as well, so I may be able to help some too. Was that Adams that shot you down? Sounds kinda like him.

Anyways, first I'll give you my impressions (sorry if I sound harsh, not trying to be- I hope every MSU premed gets in somewhere!)

1. MCAT is OK
2. GPA is good- what's your major? I'm microbio.
3. Good EC's
4. What do you have for LORs? Do you have some already, or do you still have to get them written? It can take awhile, and you want them as soon as possible.
5. You are applying late. If you're thinking of applying to rolling schools (Wayne, MSUCHM, MSUCOM, UofMich), then you're significantly disadvantaged. They are already giving out spots, and as of today, you're competing with the new batch of August MCATers as well. You'll probably get interviews, but maybe only for waitlists...

What schools are you applying to? This is a big consideration...

If you are rejected and re-apply, you'll only be disadvantaged if you haven't improved yourself as an applicant since the previous year. So, if they reject you and say "need better MCAT", you'd better come back with a better MCAT if you want a chance...

Overall, you have a shot, but it's not a sure thing. Good luck with whatever you decide. PM me if you want more info about being an MSU student or anything like that...

well, the simple fact that he said you wouldn't be getting secondaries just goes to show you that he doesn't really know what he's talking about. the majority (probably 80% of schools) send out secondaries automatically. your MCAT is borderline but GPA is solid, and none of your mcat sections are TOO bad. my brother applied with a 28 and 3.8 out of UCLA and got into 3 schools. so keep your head up and apply. quickly though. and don't be applying to john's hopkins, wash U and harvard, try drexel, temple, nymc etc. (take a look at my mdapps for more schools). best of luck
