I read the thread about laptops and heard quite a few people say that Sony Laptops were not trustworthy. I am looking for a good laptop and Sony's not only look the best looking (other than Macs), but have the sharpest clearest screens in the store.

I'm wondering if anyone had a bad experience with Sony Laptops. The screens are so bright do they die out sooner than other laptops?

Any info would be great as notebooks aren't cheap!

I have had a Sony TR2A notebook for over a year now, and I love it! I haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood), and it's very convenient because it only weighs 3lbs and the resolution on the screen is great. They discontinued the TR2A model I have in favor of a smaller one, but I really like Sonys. Many of my friends have Dell laptops, and they really like them as well- plus they come with pretty decent warranties, so I would look into those as well. Beware of refurbished ones though- I have heard horror stories! 😱

Has you noticed your screen becoming less bright after a 1.5 or is it just like new still?

sony makes very reliable products, they may be a litte pricy but they are generally worth it when you get good deals. Also its important to remember, expecially these days that the most expensive part to replace on a laptop is the screen, the screen itself is probly worth more than the other parts combined. Sonys warranties are standard, and pretty much all the latest models have the x brite screen technology, which is bright and shiny. These lcd screens however are fragile if you dont treat them like you usually should. If you buy from stores like best buy, compusa and frys, they usually over extended warranties on the prodcuts. these warranties are great tho they run upto $400 for 5 year coverage. With these warranties you just go to the store and show them, and they will replace the laptop with the same model or the next model up, that same day. This is good, but you would most likely not need to go through all this if you treat your laptop properly.

I have a external sony lcd moniter, 17 inch, that usues the same technology as the laptops, the x brite screen, iv had the moniter for almost 2 years and its worked just great, no dead pixels, no nothing.

I've bought a Vaio from the PCG-G series (released in 2001) in 2002 and I've been using it ever since. It's been 3 years now, and I've had no major problems with it. I've never had to replace my hard drive or any other component. In fact, as I begin med school this Fall, I'm debating whether I should get a newer Vaio, but seeing how money is tight, and my old PCG-G still works like new, I think I'll invest in a newer Vaio at a later date when my PCG shows signs of aging (which it hasn't yet).

I do agree that Sony products are most definitely overpriced. If you have the money, go for it, but my friends have used Dell laptops (new, not refurbished), as well as Toshiba laptops, and they are both reliable brands --pricey, too, if you want a lot of options, but within a more reasonable price range.

I've owned HP laptops before and know some people who have them. My HP internal fan died in 6 months, hard drive crashed and was unsalvagable within 1.5 years. Not a satisfactory experience. They have great customer service, though. The majority of my other friends also have had problems with HP laptop hard drives. I'm staying away from HP in the future.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to get one now. I plan to have my computer for at least a few years so I thought that getting a good brand like SONY is better than a cheaper brand. Although, no one really makes their own components (Hitachi makes Sony harddrives and cannon has been making HP printers since the begining) so who knows!

If anyone has any sony notebook horror stories please share.

Buy a Powerbook instead.

Thread over.

Sony's in Canada are NOT overpriced compared to the competitive models of other brands (DELL, Toshiba, and HP). If anything, you just gotta know when to shop for a SONY Vaio to get the best deal (ie. during certain seasons/or keeping a constant look over fluctuating prices over your desired model).

I've had a VAIO laptop for two years now and it hasn't given me any major problems at all. Instead, my friend who had a apple laptop had many problems: her battery charger broke and then her laptop went completely dead (I mean it wouldn't even turn on!) all within the first year she got it!!!! In addition, the screen has great resolution and it is very fast! takes me about two minutes to turn my computer on and start working.
