How hi do you rate the importance of spiritual well-being of students at medical schools? Which schools would you recommend for placing emphasis on the spiritual well-being of students?

I would rate it very low specifically for medical school. I think physical fitness is more important. Make time to exercise every day. It is a lot harder to study if you feel like an oily, sloppy, disgusting fat-body.

Depends what you mean by spiritual well-being, of course. If you mean going to church I'm all for it. If you mean getting your crystals to vibrate or playing at some Eastern religion then don't bother.

I don't know of any medical school that pays more then lip-service to the spiritual well-being of its students. Trust me. If you pass all of your exams and really want to be in medical school you will have no problems with spiritual well-being.

Check out some of the Catholic schools. I know that Loyola pays alot of lip service to a spiritual focus and NYMC slightly less so. I have no idea how pervasive this really is there, maybe a student from one of these schools would be willing to comment. This aspect of these schools was attractive to me when I was deciding where to apply, but I never visited either one.

I was an undergrad at St. Louis University six years ago. We had several med students who participated in the worship choir for Mass (catholic sunday service). And several of them had retreats and other activities with the theology department. They also had a priest-chaplain dedicated solely to the medical school. You will likely find more emphasis on spirituality at a Catholic school. However, at this stage in life you will also need to take time to priortize your spiritual life as it relates to physical health, relationships, income, and school, and then do your own search for a religious community in which to worship, find comfort etc.
