sponsor/endorsment from an MD?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

so i told a lady i work w about how i am applying to med school, to which she replied: "who is your sponsor? who is endorsing you?"

she said when her brother got into med school in the 60s it was only after having sent in an lor from a current physician, and the same thing happened w/in the past few years to her neighbor -- he couldn't get in, then she offered her brother as a "sponsor" to write a letter on his behalf, and he got in.

is it really that important to have a doc to write you an LOR? i've heard it can be for DO, but never for MD
also, say you have a letter committee, but want to send in additional letters, when is it recommended you send in extra "updates"? (post-secondary, pre-interview, post-interview??)

thanks!

I have the same question -- when is the best time for the updates and "extra" letters (MD or other)? Anyone have experience with this? thanks in advance. -J

It's the same as with any LOR. If a doctor that you visited once writes you a rec and says that you were a good patient, it won't help you. If a doctor you shadowed or did research with writes something awesome, that will make your app stronger. But it doesn't have to be a doctor.

heard of something like this before.

My housemate's sis was applying for Aberdeen, and her brother who's already a doctor there, wrote her a letter and she got in pretty easily

It doesn't hurt to have a letter form a physician.

There is no such thing as a sponsor for any of the schools I know of. And getting a letter from a doctor that is simply a family friend will probably be the least credible and therefor least valued letter that you get.
