ACGME-Accredited Sports Medicine Fellowships to Participate in National Resident Matching Program

The ACGME Sports Medicine Fellowship Committee has announced that beginning this year, its fellowships will be joining all other primary care sports medicine fellowship programs in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The decision to utilize NRMP has been many years in the making; it is driven by the desire to make the application process fairer for the applicants and to comply with the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Code of Ethics. AMSSM is the organization that oversees primary care sports medicine fellowships.

Specific dates related to the match can be found at www.nrmp.org/fellow/schedule.html. Briefly, a physician’s rank list needs to be submitted to NRMP by December 15, 2011, and match day will occur in early January 2012. The exact match date for 2012 has not yet been determined by NRMP. PM&R sports medicine fellowships will be abiding by all of the rules and regulations set forth by NRMP and AMSSM.

The structure of sports medicine fellowship training in the United States is somewhat complex, and allows for residents from emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, orthopedics, pediatrics, and PM&R to enter the field via different routes. It is still up to each fellowship program to decide how the application process should work and to determine the application deadline, so please contact individual fellowship directors for additional information.

Does anyone know when and where they plan on accrediting more sports fellowships?

Wow, I'm finally old enough, or been around long enough that I know most of those people.

It's scary when you find out the people you trained with are now leaders in the field.
