I'm interested in (non-ortho) sports/MSK medicine, but I know next-to-nothing about the availability of jobs in the field. How feasible is it to practice as an outpatient sports or MSK physiatrist? Is the job market very limited? Can you do sports/MSK stuff alone, or do you have to couple it with a general physiatry practice to be able to earn sufficient income? What's the future of sports/MSK physiatry like? Thanks in advance!

90+% of sports med physicians (whether it's Ortho or primary care sports med) have to practice the other parts of their base specialty to fill up a schedule.

If you're worried about bringing in enough revenue, mix in EMG, do some spine work + fluoro-guided procedures, and a little med-legal work.

agreed. pick the specialty you like best and supplement with sports.

If you choose to practice mostly outpatient MSK/Sports medicine, you will likely not be doing much "general physiatry". Depending on the group setting you would likely be doing MSK, some fluoro guided procedures, EMGs, and some sports.

It is possible to join a group doing some general physiatry as well, but job demand is pretty high with the skillset listed above.

Is there a speciality in sports medicine for residency or it is with PMR or family medicine.
thanks for your reply

it's a fellowship after residency - ABMS allows FP, PM&R, ER, IM board elgibile/certified docs who have completed an approved ACGME sports fellowship to sit for the sports boards
