I am also curious about sports medicine....What area do you need to specialize in? What type of residency do you do if you are interested in this? Is there any actual sports medicine residency?
What are all of you opinion's on this field?

Thanks

you can apply for a sports medicine fellowship after doing a residency in fp, im, or peds. if you're really serious about sports med, family practice would be the best way to go, as it is kind of a family practice fellowship program.

it's a competitive fellowship though, since it seems like most fp's have not much else to specialize in. I think the unmatch rate is close to do%.

pay is pretty decent though. probably 150-200K a year. and the work is not bad. you can end up doing a lot of outpatient ortho, and make bucks, so the orthopods can just operate.

if you're thinking about the surgical sports med, you need to do an ortho fellowship first.

There are three ways to train for sports med. The most obvious being orthopedic sugery. As mentioned before, the primary care route with fellowship. The other way is from Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency.
