Spouse & ADT

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your spouse can go but the govt will not pay for his/her travel or living expenses. They can just shack up in your motel or BOQ unit and pay out of pocket for food. Also, since you may be housed on post, your spouse may need to get a dependent ID card to facilitate getting off and on post at times when you may not be able to accompany them.

Decided to dust off this old thread, any updates from personal experience as to folks who brought their spouse and/or kid(s) and let them stay with you in base lodging? I know mil highly discourages this, but is it forbidden to let your family stay with you in base lodging?

Nope, not forbidden. I brought my family with me last month...I was with someone in April who brought her family too. I think the on ly hold ups I've encountered are your orders aren't for family lodging and the rental car if you can't drive there. Youre only approved for single officer housing, not a problem if its just a spouse but not as pleasant when bringing kids. You can get a bigger room if available and are the same price but nothing is gauraunteed.
You are the only person approved to drive your rental car and are taking a risk by letting your spouse drive it.
I did it at a base close enoigh to drive to so I avoided the rental car issue.

If you decide to leave the wife and kids at home, you can receive family separation allowance for the length of your ADT (assuming it is longer than 30 days).

It requires a little bit of paperwork on your end, but every little bit helped while still a medical student (at least for me).

I got it during Officer's Training but my 4 week ADTs came in at 28 days away.

Should be no problem at all. You will only get one per diem (for you), not also for spouse and kid like when you PCS.

Make sure to enroll your spouse in DEERS and get her/him a dependent ID upon arrival to make life easier when you're not together. Need all of the important documents - birth certs, marriage cert, social sec, etc.

Just don't list your wife's name on the hotel bill. If she's on the bill, then the govt can make you pay for your hotel (not reimburse you).

Same with rental car. Keep her name off of all the bills and you'll be fine.
Food, less serious. They just give you a perdiem rate. However, when I went to Madigan last year, they told us in inprocessing that we got the full daily perdiem, but when I went to do all the paperwork, I only got paid about half of it. Eventually, they told me that, because Madigan has a DFAC, I should have eaten all of my meals there and was not entitled to a perdiem for food oustide of the DFAC.

So, when you inprocess, you need to ask for a letter from an O6 or above that states that you are entitled to the full per diem. Otherwise it's just like $12 a day or something similarly small.

Did you get this after the fact? I just got my reumbursement and saw was only reimbursed 16 bucks a day for my last ADT at Eglin. No one told me I could or should use the DFAC at inprocessing.

Think I can get it fully reimbursed after the fact?

Yes, that was after the fact. Nobody told me anything. I got mad and called both DFAS and Madigan. I was told later, after having been reimbursed, that I should have used the DFAC.

So, they said "You get $60 (?)/day for food" at orientation, then 28 days later, reenforced that notion at outprocessing. It was only after I was gone that they said it had changed.

Tripler states on their website that they do not have dining available and full perdiem is authorized. I printed that page and sent it in with my request after my ADT there. For the rest, it is my understanding that you need an official statement to that effect from an O6 or above. That is what I was told by DFAS after it all went down.

So did you get the O6 letter and grt thr rest of your money? That's a lot of money.

I've put in a few email and phone calls and have the Retired O6 student coordinator confirming they don't do meals for officers...hopefully it gets sorted out eventually.
