Hey guys, I've been waitlisted at Saint Louis U and I'm planning to fly out to visit since I have a great deal of free time right now. I really want to check out the city, and see what kind of things it has to offer. Does anyone have any recommendations of places to check out for a potential applicant? What about nightlife?

Here are there recommended accomodations. Are they any good? Should I rent a car?

Drury Inn or Hampton at Union Station
Best Western Inn at the Park

Thanks,

Hey,

I live in the Metro St. Louis area and I love it here! There are top notch sports teams, restaurants, clubs, and entertainment in and around the city. You can go to Blues, Rams, or Cardinal games. There are MILLIONS of clubs around. I'm not a big club hopper, but a few clubs I'm familiar with are Club St. Louis (Washington Ave.), AJs (downtown), and the Velvet Room (on Washington Ave.). Those are the clubs where you'll find alot of pro athletes hangin out. For your hotel accomodations...I'd go with the Hampton at Union Station! It is awesome..and that's an understatement! Plus, out-of-town sports teams stay there when in St. Louis. (if you haven't guessed I'm a huge St. Louis sports fan). There is also the world-renowned St. Louis Symphony (on Grand near SLU), the St. Louis ZOO, ART, HISTORY, WAR museums, plus a "rad" science center (all in Forest park). Tons of shopping. I recommend the St. Louis Galleria or Plaza Frontenac..real fancy places. You can go up in the arch an view the city. Tour the Budweiser facilities. Go to Ted Drews for frozen yogurt. Live it up! St. Louis is awesome! Did I forget anything? If there is anything else I can help with, please say so.

Peace

That sounds tight! Yeah, I'm from LA and I know the feeling being a hardcore LA fan and especially of the sports. Go Lakers! It's good to hear some positive things as some posters on http://interviewfeedback.com only listed negatives about the city. I want new experiences in other cities. Hey, can you email me? I want create an itinerary for things to see and do when I get there. I'm still trying to figure out how long to stay.

Visiting any place and how you feel about it is all related to your perspective going into it. Some folks may hate St. Louis. Some may love it. It depends on how you look at the city and where you go in the city that makes a difference. Maybe many of the folks who posted badly of the StL didn't go and experience the city. You 'gotta' get out and enjoy it. The city is awesome! Tons of parks, lakes, rivers, forests, not to mention the riverboat Casinos! lol I love those darn things! There is tremendous night life in the StL too. Go down to "the Landing" and you'll find just about anything you could ever imagine as far as night life goes. Union station is a cool place to hang out. I was there a couple weekends ago as a metter of fact. The have all sorts of cool shops, and restaurants like the Hard Rock Cafe, Dierdorf and Harts($$), and even a Hooters! I can't say enough about the town. It's awesome. It's a big city with a small town feel taht's for sure. You probably won't be in town long enough to experience everything, so grab a book or brochure from a travel agent and flip through it. That'll help you find accomodations and pick-and-choose where you want to go around town. By the way, SLU is a good medical school!

Peace

I'll give you an email.

Dude, Nelly is from St. Louis. It has to be sweet.

St. Louis really is great. It's got everything you could want in a city (great eating esp. The Hill if you love Italian, Great theater/orchestra, and great museums/zoo which are all free.) If I had gotten into SLU I'd be going to St. Louis for sure. Also did I mention that it is a dirt cheap place to live compared to just about any other city its size?
Anyway, I have to settle for New York City instead.

BTW - Nelly is a platinum selling rapper (the man behind the song Country Grammar.)

Wow...you guys are getting me hyped...though I'm just waitlisted there. I have to admit though, there is one thing misssing from St. Louis. I'm a HUGE basketball fan and there isn't a team.

Nevertheless, it would be a change from being in LA for so long.

I actually had the opportunity to meet Nelly. He's very active around St. Louis and does lots of shows and community stuff. He's one of the coolest celebrities I've met yet! Plus...he's 6x platinum FYI. Have you seen the commercial for St. Louis..."We've got it good."? It's suppose to draw people to the StL from other cities because frankly, it's much cooler by the Mississippi!

The living conditions are so much better than any other "major" city like NY($), CHI($), LA($), etc. The only thing I see wrong with SLU's medical school is that it's smack dab near one of the Ghettos. Most teaching hospitals are, though. If you like action and lots of violence (like me), it's gonna be fun for ya! Some people don't like that stuff, though.

For the basketball fan in you...there are two basketball teams in St. Louis. The SLU Billikens, which are always at or near the top of Conference USA's rankings. And, we have the St. Louis Swarm of the IBL. They're pretty darn good! I think they just won the league championship too! They have Leon Smith(Formerly of the Dallas Mavericks), and a couple other ex-NBAers. Pretty hot stuff!

I love living in the St. Louis area. There is so much to do! I can't possibly imagine how folks could say it's boring!? I really hope you get into SLU..it's a nice school in a nice town! To me, the StL is heaven on earth! (Not really, but you get my drift).

Oh yeah!! GO BLUES!!!!! Bryce Salvador is a god in St. Louis!! Thank you Bryce for the slapper, baby!!

Peace

Did I mention that St. Louis is a sports mecca? The people here love sports!! I suggest going to a professional sporting event when you visit. There's nothing like it! That's why St. Louis was ranked #1 as the BEST sports city in American last year. The fans really rally behind the players and the players pay them back with community appearances and volunteer events. It's really a cool thing to experience. Imagine building a house in a low-income neighborhood with guys like Kurt Warner and Mark McGwire!! This stuff really happens in the StL! No joke.

Peace

Hey wylde,
I am a senior at SLU and am going to be a first year med student at SLU next year. If i were you i would probably stay at the Drury or Hampton inn near Union Station. The med campus is really close and there are a lot of good restaurants at Union Station. It would probably be a good idea for you to rent a car. you could use the metrolink or a cab to get around but that would be a pain in my opinion. some of the notes posted above have some good ideas for stuff to do. There are a lot of bars near the campus and downtown. We also have an excellent array of gambling boats (there are two right on the Mississippi, if you decided to stay at the hampton inn). From what i've read, atlas has only good things to say about St. louis. I have lived here my whole life, went to high school here, college, and now i will be going to med school in st. louis. i'll be honest with you though, even though atlas made it sound like st. louis is ?heaven?, most people from the west coast aren?t huge fans of the midwest. there are good things and bad things about st. louis. if you do end up coming here it will be a lot different from living out in the beautiful weather of LA. my girlfriend is from seattle and she can?t stand the humidity here. it can get pretty nasty. One of my fraternity brothers is from LA, and he?ll tell you that st. louis is nothing like home. I?m not trying to tell you st. louis sucks, but just to warn you that it isn?t heaven on earth. i also saw that Atlas mentioned that we are " smack dab near one of the Ghettos". though this may be true, it is a pretty safe campus. SLU has a ton of security running around. the bad thing about the medical school is that it is hella expensive. tuition alone is around $32000 dollars, and it keeps increasing every year. i'm sure by the time i graduate it will be pushing 37000. the jesuits here try to bleed you dry. oh yeah, I see you are laker fan. No offense, but I hate them. Actually one of my friends who is also going to be a first year at the med school with me is also from LA . He is a huge lakers fan and it was painful for me to see him gloat last year after they won. Shaq is lucky that they let him get away with throwing his big body around and sit in the lane for the duration of the shot clock. I hope san antonio meets them in the western conference finals and destroys them.

There is a problem with weather indeed. St. Louis has it's beautiful days, but winters are COLD COLD COLD and summers get HOT HOT HOT and HUMID :-(! I can't stress the humidity part enough! I, too, have lived in the area my whole life and would love to stay in St. Louis for school. SLU is on my list, but I'm not sure if I'm very competitive. I have yet to take the MCAT, and my science GPA is ~.3 lower than the average, which bothers me. My Overall GPA is right on the money, though. I really want to go to SLU med, too. Also, I hope I didn't offend anyone with my "ghetto" comment. I notice that the last poster made note of it and I hope I didn't upset people. That was not my intent. I guess since we're on the topic of negative aspects about the city I'll talk about the traffic. The traffic situation can be just as bad as most cities, probably not like LA though. So, in your case, the traffic situation would improve. But, in my opinion, the positive aspects outweigh the negatives. The Stl is a great place to be.
