alright guys, you know what night it is!!!

well last thursday i was hopelessly destroyed when i got no call, but then i called patricia in the office on friday and she told me i had yet to reach committee.

it seems that they dont go completely in order then. so i guess it's anyone's game.

i interviewed in mid jan. and this would be my 4 week mark (not including the thursday of the week i interviewed).

alright fellas, you know what to do...

post if you hear anything tonight.

sigh, nothing tonight. i go to bed alone again, heartbroken on valentine's day, only this time it wasn't a woman that snubbed me.

Sorry to intrude, but whats up with night phone-calls? Is that some kind of a mystery procedure particular to Stanford? Who makes the call?

yeah, my friend called me up at 11 to see if i got in. i shat myself and my heart friggin jumped out of my chest as i slowly picked up the phone, told my friend to go to hell, hung up, and died.

really heartbroken tonight guys.

as someone who has yet to get into a school he has any desire to attend, i dont know how much more of this i can take.

oh yeah, lady in red: stanford calls accepted applicants as soon as the decision is made when the committee meets on thursday nights. this means that any time from 5-10pm pacific time (or in my case 8pm-1am eastern time) stanford can call. since this is my 4 week mark, i was hoping for a call tonight.

i will call my admissions counselor and see if i was brought up at committee last night; this way at least i wont be in limbo waiting for that damn rejection in the mail 10 days from now.

Hey, what do you mean your admissions counselor? Is each Stanford applicant assigned someone?

sort of, they have two people there whose jobs it is to serve as a sort of liaison between the applicants and the admissions committee. they're the people you speak to if you ever have any questions regarding anything. i think there are only two (Juhn Verrano and Patricia Peres) and each is responsible for a specific half of the applicants.

Are you sure that they assign half the people to each? I've always just talked to Patricia, and that was just because I found her name first when I emailed her... I didn't know things were more organized than that. :)

Hey, how long did it take you between when your application was complete and when you heard about your interview? My application was only complete in early January (!!), so I'm not worried yet, but I'd like to hear soon!

13. choker, where have you been accepted that you're not satisfied with?

PS. although i was tempted to say "screw you, at least you know you're in" i realized that you've never really faltered, and were always on the right track to get into a great school. so you have every reason to be disappointed about lesser schools. still, out of curiosity..where have you been accepted?

well im holding an acceptance at stony brook and that's about it. i withdrew from downstate. now, stony brook is great and all, but i just didn't get a good vibe when i was there. it just didn't feel right at all. i am not sure that i will be willing to force myself to go there and am debating taking a year off to do something interesting for a year and reapplying if i dont get in anywhere i like.

now i DID like nyu, a lot. but i interviewed on an all nighter (my suitemates were high and loud and kept me up)and totally screwed it up. as such, i have yet to hear from them since my interview in early dec. hopefully tomorrow they'll send me a nice email, or even better, columbia will say yes tomorrow and completely change my life in a millisecond.

ah, whatever. im getting tired of hoping like this only to be disappointed.

my situation is that i'm waiting to hear from 8 schools post-interview, and if i get into any of 6 of them, i will be absolutely head over heals ecstatic. if i dont, i will debate taking time off. now this isn't to say that i thought the schools were beneath me; i am not basing this decision on prestige or anything, it's just that with the schools i didn't like, i just really didn't like them, the quality of lifestyle, the location, etc.

-whatever, im rambling.
i hope tomorrow works out.

good luck guys. i hope you guys fare well, because no one deserves to be screwed by this process (except for that guy that keeps sending me death threats over the PM).

choker, I'm only saying this because I am a bitter applicant without acceptances, but are you crazy??? God forbid you tell Stonybrook no and reapply and don't get in anywhere next year! That would be so risky. For example, I know of a certain SDNer who had an interview last year with a certain FL school, improved his application, and didn't get an interview this year with them. Things like this can happen. Then again choker, I'm sure you're a very qualified applicant and shouldn't have a problem if you choose to reapply. If you're able to defer Stonybrook for a year, then forget this post.

Good luck to you

choker, i totally feel your pain. i interviewed at stanford and loved it. i definitely had my phone on all night when i went out that thursday (this is in december). it turns out my file was reviewed the next week, so there was another sleepless night (due to the time change, the call would have been pretty late). and it never came.

i wound up getting waitlisted and have pretty much decided i'm not going to beat down their door. you know i'm hoping for good news from p and s, too. i'm probably going to uva or nyu if i don't get into columbia/cornell/nw.

i know the feeling of waiting for 8 schools for a long time, but you have to realize that you got interviews at all of those (awesome) schools, and you do have a chance of getting into one of them. and that's all you have to get into. if you got into both stanford and columbia, think what a tough decision you'd have to make!! don't get down, and DON'T feel like stony brook is a bad choice. it's waaaay cheaper. and people do excellent research there, get terrific residencies and wind up teaching surgery at stanford or columbia. i can understand taking time off, but don't throw the acceptance away.

as someone who admits to caring a bit about school name and reputation, even i can say that MED SCHOOL IS MED SCHOOL. you will be an MD. you will be able to say you went to columbia undergrad and then only spent 50K as opposed to 250K on your medical education. and that's your WORSE CASE SCENARIO! not too shabby!!!!

but don't feel bad about pining for stanford. it's med school heaven out there. i guess they just don't have room in their 80 person class for us... sniff.

well, I'm happy to report I didn't have a long and fruitless wait by the phone last night!

... because I got my waitlist letter in the mail yesterday. yeah, I'm disappointed, but it was definitely not unexpected (I felt stanford was my weakest interview - damn the no coffee!!) The Bay Area is just not loving me back.

anyway, choker, I know what you're thinking, but just because we interviewed together doesn't mean our files automatically were reviewed on the same night (last thursday, I guess it was). don't lose heart, and let me know how it turns out.
