Family Practice allows you to design a maternity or paternity elective if you are pregnant or a new parent since it obviously gives you valuable experience as a family practitioner. You usually have to still come in 1/2 day a week or so to see clinic patients and do some reading and a presentation or project. It's a nice idea and many FP residents take advantage. It allows you to have another paid month after you've used up your vacation and sick depending on your program policies. There's a program in New Jersey, Overlook Hospital, that has ONSITE childcare too, in a very nice setting, so you can even go visit your kids during lunch etc.
