Be honest. Give me advice for entering this field. I know the O.R. has some of the strongest personalities in medicine and I want to be well prepared for how I will be treated.

You will be treated like sh1t initially.......develop a thick skin. Eventually, when you show your skills, you will be treated okay.

Peace!

Just make sure you know your stuff, and the physicians will learn to like you and if you become one of their fav. they might even request you on all of their cases.

Sounds eerily similar to hooking, doesn't it?

TO me,

It's all about experience. As you go, you'll get better and better at what you do. You'll know where crap is, you'll know the procedures better and what to expect, and you'll know what each surgeons wants and doesn't want. It's kind of like handing toys over to overgrown babies who at a moments notice throw tantrums, kick and scream.

... and of course save your life through invasive procedures. Eet's awwwlll gooood!!

I never really had much respect for the type of surgeon that often "loses" it. Getting mad, screaming, throwing instruments, and/or pouting doesn't make the case go any better...in fact, it usually has the exact opposite effect. There are times that you must be intense, but leave the anger outside of the OR.

At my hospital, we have a surgeon that none of the nurses (or residents for that matter) can stand to scrub with because of his attitude. It's so unfortunate because the guy is good technically and could offer a lot, but that is all overshadowed by his primadonna actions.

Just know the procedures, the intruments and do your job well. Most surgeons will have other things on their mind, and are unlikely to notice you unless you make the procedure appreciably more difficult or time consuming.
