Awwwwww shoot. Tomorrow is the big day and I must admit that I'm scared silly. I have no idea what to expect and I think that's what makes it so bad. Just wanted to give a shout out to all my fellow gen surg PGY-1's...especially my girl Vincristine and my buddy JMatt :). Socialist...knock'em dead at Wash U I'll hold down the fort here in Columbus. Take care all...and "just don't kill anybody" :scared:

I'm sh***ing a brick right now too my friend. After talking with the outgoing intern on my service this afternoon, it looks terrifying. Our service is WAY overloaded right now. I haven't touched a patient or written a note in 4 months (vacation) and am afraid I'll crash and burn in the morning. AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

I can't imagine how this kind of schedule is humanly possible for a year, much less for 5. Guess we'll find out soon enough though.

Good luck everyone.

Hey! I feel dissed I didn't get a shout out! ;)

I am so glad others seem equally scared. I got my worst case scenario rotation first, so I am really high on the anxiety scale right now! Haven't even gotten a tour of the hospital yet, among many other things that weren't covered in orientation.

Smurfette...it goes without saying that you'll always be in my heart :) I'm a little freaked right now, so I tend to forget the basics. Sorry

We started last week. It has been hectic, but it has been fun. It's amazing; last month I had to beg to be an active team member and now I'm throwing every stitch. Good luck to you guys; it isn't as bad as it seems it will be.

best of luck to you guys! intern year will go by fast.

my only advice.... don't let yourself get too high or too low. if you do something well, take satisfaction in that. and if you do something poorly, don't kick yourself too hard over it. just learn and move on.

again, best of luck, and have fun!

I didn't get a shout-out either!

Vincristine, one of my fellow interns went to med school with you!

I'm also worried...looking up my patients' labs and rads reports now, just so when I have to present all 15 of them tomorrow morning at 6, I'll sound somewhat articulate. Prerounding is going to suck though. I haven't written a SOAP note since October. :(

I should have popped in to tell you all it would okay. I, too, was scared ****less the night before my first day. My chief runs a tight ship (I think that's as PC as I've ever been), and I have to admit I cried myself to sleep before my second day. I had survived my first day, but was overtired and didn't want this to be my life. It gets better (though I'm going 28 days with a full day off), you get faster, and you'll learn to nod your head and say yes. Remember your team now will not always be your team (that may be good or bad).

Blade, what program are you at? You're in GA? Can't figure out who's with you....hmmm, did he/she just do M1 with me?

SteadyEddy, I'm sure you're doing great. What's the mention that your wife is coming for the weekend? Has she not yet moved to Ohio?

Hey there,
If anyone can knock them dead it is you four. I am expecting big things from all of you. My interns had that glazed look at the end of the day but I think they are going to be fine. Columbus is a neat town. I should be there for a couple of meetings later this year.
njbmd :D :D

Christ that sounds brutal. (I heard BID has a cool wireless-labs-vitals system going, but didn't know it was that rough.) I'm sorry you had such a rough first day - and no full days off for 4 weeks sounds borderline anti-ACGME/RRC! What rotation is that?

I'm at Emory - the guy who knew you has initials JP. Ring any bells? Mentioned you by name, and I recognized it (only because of your old username :) )...the MIT undergrad sealed it too.

The BID order entry/computer system rocks. It's not wireless but with a computer around every corner, you can easily stop to enter orders & check labs on ANYONE ANYWHERE including home. The system was actually devised inhouse and continues to be improved per our recommendations. BUT, I'm not at the Big House this month -- I'm out at our community hospital which means I've used 4 entire pens my first week which aggravates my my carpal tunnel more than operating.

I have to agree 28 days straight w/o a day off (I'm off the last 2 of 30 days on service) sounds more than borderline to me. Unfortunately, we're short a 2nd year b/c of liscense issues, and there's work to be done, plain and simple. Interestingly enough, if I only worked 6 days/week I'd actually be sort of at 80 hrs, too.

I do know JP :) He was in my anatomy group M1. He's a rockin' good guy, and I'm sure a fabulous surgeon/intern.
