State-of-residence change during gap year?

I would check with the state of Pennsylvania directly to see how they determine residency. In general, a gap year doesn't change your residency. My state for example, considers me a resident as long as my parents still live there, regardless of how old I am or where I live now.

PA has no public MD schools.
FL has 6 public MD schools.

PA has 8 total MD schools.
FL has 8 total MD schools.

PA Total Apps/Total Matriculants/Matriculant Rate: 1665/757/45.4%
FL Total Apps/Total Matriculants/Matriculant Rate: 3340/1131/33.9%

Interpret how you will. But FL has many more public schools, with a less competitive applicant pool.
 
Florida schools just need you to move in 1 year before first day of class to be considered a resident. So, congratulations, you are now a Florida resident since Florida schools start in July/August!

No idea about Pennsylvania
