Is it the general national trend for state medical schools to give extreme preference to state residents? I live in Kansas, and I know University of KS SOM is that way. There are some state schools out there that are intriguing to me, however I'm wondering what the general trend is....any help would be appreciated

Thanks!

Yes, the general trend is for state schools to give preference to residents. Since most of the funding from state schools comes directly from the state itself, the state has an interest in keeping graduate physicians in state. Most states require 90% of the available places in a med school to go to a resident of that state.

But check the MSAR for exact percentages of out-of-state students at each school. Some state schools take a decent number of out-of-staters. OHSU, U. Michigan and UVa come to mind.
