I was wondering if anyone knew whether ophtho fellowship
programs look at step 2 scores in the same way as
residency programs look at step 1 scores. I am curious
because I have been told different things: just pass or it will
matter if you plan on doing fellowship. I don't know if I should
try to just comfortably pass or do as well as I can.
Does anyone know what the more competitive fellowships like
retina or oculoplastics look at?

Thanks!

Just pass Step 2. No one really looks at the Step 2 or 3 scores.

If they don't look at step 2 and 3 scores, then what do they focus on? Is it mainly what ophtho program you are coming from, scores on inservice exams, or both. I assume fellowship decisions come before specialty board scores are available, so I'm just curious as to what the PD's look at. As always, I'm sure research is a big bonus, but what else? Thanks.

1) Letters of rec.
2) Where you did your residency.
3) History of academic endeavors and research.
4) Some look at OKAP scores.
5) Previous academic history... AOA, medical school, etc...
6) A big part is your personality and if you'll blend well with faculty and other residents/fellows; therefore, many judge you greatly by interview.
