There is much debate in our breed about splitting the two types (american and Japanese) into two breeds, so if possible, I would like to avoid a japanese name. As far as names go, I got nuthin :(

Here's some pics!

I'm not good with names, unfortunately, but your puppy is VERY CUTE!!!!

He's precious. All my pets have people names. But if you're going to go for a non-people name, I think you should go for something nerdy and fun that most people probably won't recognize as being totally nerdy (for example, I would LOVE to have a male boxer named Sartorius).

Kerry or King. :D

The guitarist from Slayer (Kerry King) used to breed akitas. I have no idea why I know that but now I always associate akitas with Slayer.

Not that I mind, both are pretty metal.

I vote Banjo :)

But I guess it would depend on whether your pup is a boy or girl! You may not want to take my advice, I have an Aussie named sprocket :)

He's a boy.

and sprocket is a cute name! Like the dog from Fraggle Rock!

I never saw Fraggle rock...was there a dog named sprocket?? That's so cool! Actually, my fiance is a total car guy (mechanical engineer) and so we thought it fitting since Sprocket was his first pet (FIRST EVER, amazing...how can people let their children grow up without pets?? It's beyond me...)

Whoa, I googled it and it said he bred winning show akitas! I wonder what kennel name he bred under... I wonder if any of his lines still exist!

Oh, and CBRGirl, http://www.geocities.com/sprocketFR/ Cool huh!

Did you ever think of a name? He looks like a Winston to me. But I go for older people names.

My avatar is now my pup Lily, and before her we had an Analiese.

Haha, it was probably something like "Kerry's Reign in Blood Kennels" or "God Hates us All Except Adorable Akitas Kennel"

The Possibilities are endless. I wonder how many anti-slayer folk bought dogs from him unknowingly.

i have no good name suggestions...but OH MY GOODNESS WHAT A CUTIE!!

now you'll have me craving my boy (Pembroke Welsh Corgi - "Prescott") when he was a fluffy puppy all over again.

I always think of "coffee" color when I look at this color pattern for some reason...

Latte Macchiato? I don't know what kind of call name you'd use though. Espresso? ;)

Thats my dog's name (the Portuguese Water Dog to the left in my photo)! We call him Winnie a lot! I have no idea where i got that name from though - I was 10!

Its a good name for a dog!

Such a cute puppy and so many interesting names......

I vote to name him Oso....It means Bear, but then you can also do the nerdy thing and be like cause hes O sooo cute and O soo nice...haha.

Okay, I'll give it a shot. I am thinking he won't stay a cute puppy very long and he will grow into a very fine looking male. :) My suggestion would be to stay away from the "cutesy names" and go with Chip (still sounds a little cutesy), Dozer (like bulldozer and not sleeping dozer:sleep:, Baron, Kimba, Jake or Quincy.

Just for laughs...Skeeter the Akita :D

If you were going Japanese (which I know you are not), I really, really like Shogun.

Good luck and he is a beautiful dog.

I tend to have odd taste in names (the last 3 guide dog puppies I've raised have been Meeka, Lindley and Wilkie). But, here goes:

Jury, Graham, Krypton, Ryker/Ryder, Timber...

I should really go study and stop name-generating :)

Hey, akitavet. Congrats on your new family member. Very first job I ever had was working at a boarding kennel. Owner raised Akitas. This may be overdone, but I thought it was cool, she used Inunit names (ie Alaskan) and some Russian names. Cant Help ya with the russian, but heres some cool Inunit names for dogs. My favorite Male of hers was named Nanuq. Anyway, good luck, I feel for ya. My dog is almost 2, had while we picked out his call name pretty quickly.. Diesel (my husbands a diesel truck mechanic), it took us forever to come up with his registered name. We wanted something to go with Diesel but gave up and decided on...Matrix's Warrior Lord Gatekeeper. Heres a pic. http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa243/Gatekpr70/IMG_0140.jpg

I suppose Fluffy Bundle of Immense Cuteness wouldn't work:rolleyes:...but it would be fitting - how CUTE:love:

Oh my GOD, he is precious!!! Do you have a hard time leaving the house in the morning? It already takes me a long time to say goodbye to my puppies (who are 5 and 3 years old); if they were baby puppies, little roly-poly fluffballs, I might not be able to tear myself away!

Whew. Anyway.

What about naming him after a star? Such as Orion, Rigel, Aldebaran, Alcyone, Atlas, Arcturus, Sirius (I think Arcturus would be good for an Akita!).

Ardal (AHR-dal, means brave bear in Gaelic)

Ragnar (character in my favorite book)

Did I mention that he's CUTE?!?!?!?

Aniketos - the unconquerable one. It's Greek though, I believe. I do know there was a minor Olympian god by that name.

Don't mind me, I have a cat named Apollo (god, not spaceshuttle). All of them would have been named after greek mythology if I had not been outvoted come naming time

I tend to have odd taste in names (the last 3 guide dog puppies I've raised have been Meeka, Lindley and Wilkie).

Pupsforseeing - did you actually get to name the dogs you act as a puppy raiser for? Cause the guide dog company I work with names the dogs themselves by litter (i.e. each litter gets a letter in alphabetical order and names all the puppies using that letter) and once a name is used its off the market for 7 years - kinda like hurricanes! So you see some pretty interesting names that way!

My mom always suggests the name Igor for a dog!

I know you said you didn't have any ideas for names so you might not be at this point, but just incase this list generates some ideas...when my family is naming a new pet sometimes we let them pick their own name if we can't decide! Often we will try calling him/her by the various names and watching the responses. Anyone else or is that just my wacky family!?

Kind of. Each litter is assigned a letter in alphabetical order and then the raiser gets to choose a name. The name cannot be currently used by another puppy, working guide, or breeder in the program. And, the names have to be approved by the school (names like U-haul and Wiggles have been rejected in the past :))...they have to have some dignity and not be too long/obnoxious.

Makes sense. That's neat that you got to have some say in names as a puppy raiser. I've seen dogs with both normal names (India) to some more unique names, Razzle-Dazzle! Interesting to see how different companies work!

How about a Hawaiian name? I like Kale (said like "caw-lay") for him. It basically means strong/manly.

He is A-DORABLE!! *swoon*

He rather reminds me of a polar bear. Their Latin name is Ursus martimus, so either Ursus or Martimus (Marti for short?) would be cool. Or you could go with the Latin for grizzly bear: Ursus arctos horribilis. Arctos would be pretty cool. Or heck, I'm a big LOST fan. Name him Dharma for the island polar bears.

I won't weigh in on the name debate, but after the OES (from which breed I've had two absolutely wonderful dogs), Akitas run a close second in my heart. My dear friend has an Akita named Magic -- a lovely dog, but I always say that she has built in stealth technology because you turn around, there she is, and you never hear her coming. Pretty neat trick for a 100+ pound powerhouse.

Thanks for all of your ideas! There are some great ones here. We have come up with a couple of ideas for registered names (have to do something other than stalk the mailman) so we're still working on call names and welcome suggestions.

Here they are:

Mt Joy's See If I Care Yuzawa
or
Mt Joy's Devil Made Me Do It Yuzawa
