Does anyone know how long you usually have to wait to hear post-interview from Stony Brook? I interviewed 8 weeks ago and have not heard a word...I figure that it can't be good news, but I'm holding out hope that maybe my interviewer was just slow in presenting my file (there are a few threads from last year in which SDNers said that happened to them).
Anyone else waiting on them or have insights? Thanks 👍

I interviewed early sept; still haven't heard back. I'm not ny-state so maybe thats why?

We were told that Stonybrook reads every piece of information in your file very carefully and typically they take longer to give out a decision than most schools. I don't think the fact that you haven't hear anything yet is a bad sign. Best of Luck.

I interviewed on 9/16 I think and still haven't heard a decision. I got sick of waiting and called them on Monday, but the woman that answered the phone just said it probably means they haven't made a decision on me yet and to give them till mid-December. If I haven't heard by then, I can call back. I'm pretty sure it's not gonna be good news though because I didn't really hit it off with my interviewer (he didn't stop talking) so he couldn't have presented me very well to the ad com. It's ok with me though, I wasn't crazy about the school at all. Good luck!

Ok, i interviewed at Stony Brook on nov 9. i just called this morning and they said that they have sent correspondence in the mail but they wouldn't tell me whether that was an acceptance, rejection or waitlist. Now I will not be back in my apartment in school for over two weeks and I know most schools want to know before two weeks. So two questions...
1) Do you guys think its an early rejection or waitlist (does stony send out rejections yet) or a quick acceptance? Anyone else have this happen to them?
2) The adcom left for thankgiving, so should I call back on monday and explain or just wait till i get back?

Thanks a lot everyone, I guess Stony can have some pretty varied response times.
I got up the nerve to call, and the very nice woman on the other end basically told me that they were discussing my file as we spoke & I should hear very soon. Good to know, but now I'm gonna be a wreck over Thanksgiving. Gotta breathe :scared:

good luck supercluster...
Any luck with my questions guys ?

Hey, as far as I know no one has gotten a rejection from Stony (it's not listed on the rejection thread yet), nor is it on the waitlist thread. Perhaps it does what the other SUNYs do and accepts or puts on "hold" for later action everyone at this point? I definitely think it *could* be an acceptance. I hope so! As for your problem, I think you should call on Monday and explain what happened. If Stony still can't give you your status, maybe you could find someone who can check your mail for you? I know that Stony always sends acceptances in large DHL envelopes, so it's pretty obvious what your disposition is as soon as you see the envelope. If it is an acceptance, then maybe they could send it to you? I don't know if this is possible, but hopefully you know someone who's hanging around your school's area? If not, we can continue to brainstorm. Maybe if you asked to talk to someone in the office who might be at liberty to reveal your status over the phone?

How does stony brook send their acceptances? (letter - big/small envelope...? ) Anyone waitlisted or rejected yet?

hey supercluster, i'm in the same boat. i interviewed oct. 1st, and still haven't heard anything from them. i called them about 2 weeks ago and the secretary told me that they had not begun discussing my app yet. i think it really depends on when your interviewer is available for the committe meetings. (and they have the committee meetings every 2 or 3 weeks, or so i am told.)

best of luck.

Did stony send out any thank you letter... such as a "thank you for interviewing" after your interview. The situation is that I received a letter from stony (don't know what it says yet - not at home, a neighbor told me). But it was only 2 weeks after my interview. I am trying to keep my hopes up. So I wanted to know if people got a letter saying that they were rejected or waitlisted or a thank you for interviewing letter yet so I can prepare myself.

I didn't get a thank you for interviewing letter or any other correspondence and it's been over 8 weeks, so I doubt that you're receiving anything other than a decision. That's very fast though!
No one on SDN has posted anything but Stony acceptances, but of course some people may just have not posted their other results. Hope the mail comes soon. Best of luck! :luck:

So as I said before, I interviewed on 9/16, but today I finally got my result via snail mail - a placement on the high priority waitlist if I want it. Took them long enough.

ah me too, same result today. damn. still searching for that first acceptance 🙁
good luck to everyone waiting

i bet there's a pretty fast turnover off of the high priority wait list...and that acceptances are probably given in place of those who decline their acceptances initially. I know some people who have turned down the opportunity to deposit $100 to hold their place in the class. Best of luck.

I am not going to take them up on their offer of the HPA list, so there's a waitlist spot for someone else! Yes, I know, not nearly as exciting as an acceptance being turned down, but it's something. Good luck

I got a waitlist letter yesterday, and although it says high priority, I think everyone gets that. Thankyou DGHiker for turning down a spot! Stony is my first choice and I will remain hopeful. I have a feeling that us waitlisters will have to wait until may for that list to move. Good Luck to all!!

I don't know what I missed about Stony Brook that everybody else seems to have picked up on. Maybe it's because I was there during Rosh Hashanah (sorry if I butchered that spelling) and no one was around but I didn't like the school at all. I didn't like the area either. Maybe I was just having an off day? Well, anyway, best of luck to you cytotech, I hope you get in!!

just found out that about 1/3 of the incoming class is taken off the high priority list. I guess the question is how many people do they put on the waiting list.

Is 1/3 a lot? I remember them saying on my interview day that they have a very high percentage of people who actually end up matriculating after being accepted right off the bat. I think they (the director of admissions?) specifically said they manage to retain a high percentage of people with multiple acceptances. You think that was bull or is 1/3 not that much?

well relative to other private schools its a low percentage. some schools, for example tufts, end up accepting about 400 students for 160 spots, i'm guessing because of the tuition. since stony brook's matriculating class is only 100, 1/3 is about 33 students. so i figure they end up accepting only 133-150 students total. so i calculate about 66% who get accepted to the school choose to go, which i think is relatively high, maybe not amongst state medical colleges.

In case anyone is interested, the Applied/Interviewed/Accepted/Enrolled thread from 2002 (which I have bookmarked, yes I'm a dork http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=51012) has the following data for Stony Brook:
Total: 2,526 595 271 102 In state: 1,898 584 266 101
Out of state: 628 11 5 1 Women: 1,237 282 150 54
Minorities: 1,052 250 111 39 International: 33 0 0 0
Acceptance rate: 10.7%

Take home message: 266 instate acceptances for 101 spots. I have the impression that Stony Brook usually has some waitlist movement but not as much as the other SUNYs. I have no idea how many they accept outright. 😕

am I reading this right? I know its a state school, but they only accepted 5 out of staters? and one went?

yeah, I think that's typical, isn't it ridiculous? Stony Brook hates out of staters. There was an out of state applicant interviewing on my day, and I wondered why she even bothered--it seems pretty hopeless.

The USNews Medical School book offers the following 2003 stats:

Total Applied: 2523
Interviewed: 564
Accepted: 266
Enrolled: 101

Supercluster's numbers are quite similar; this book says that in 2003 only 8 out-of-staters were accepted and only 2 went.

My thought is that 1/3 of the matriculating class off of the HP List is actually kinda high/favorable for those on the HP list...if ~265 are accepted after the interview, and the class is only filled with ~67 or so of those 265, then there is some considerable dipping into the HP list. I guess a question that also bears asking is how high on HP one is positioned...

Good luck to all; DG - I may end up there - it'd be neat if you did too...

Really? I thought you'd be an Emory boy for sure. That's sad because I just sent in my reply today to withdraw my name. 🙁 Like I said, I must've missed out big time by going on Rosh Hashanah (again, sorry if I spelled that totally wrong) because I totally wasn't impressed. Ah well, you know what my first choice is, and I know it's an option for you too, so maybe we could see each other there? Maybe not..... 😉

the analysis of out of staters is incorrect.

11 out of staters interviewed, and 5 were accepted which is near 50%.

So it's damn near impossible to receive an interview, not to be accepted.

😀

mmmm...I wonder if you are talking about me!!! Kidding-I am technically out of state, but went to Stony Brook for a degree and my mother and grandma (read free dinners if I were to get in there!) live nearby. I guess everyone has there own reasons for applying somewhere. If I did not attend Stony ugrad, I would also not think it is so great, but living there and being near the beach, even in the winter, is really nice. Also the east end is getting more and more built up so the hospital will grow too. I know it is an eyesore and the weirdest place inside, but I think of it as unique. Also when you go up to those top floors you can see really far out, I have seen many a resident take a break to watch the sunset. Ahhhhhh Stony Brook, wow I really am a dork!

ah, good point, I stand corrected 🙄

D-

You withdrew?!? Bummer. But when I asked them about me NOT wanting to research, they said "Good." So I know that maybe another school would give you something more your style...

Emory vs. Stony Brook...depends on how the "cookie$ crumble", so to speak. For what it's worth, I'm sending the Roc a "no thanks"...

They sent me a "no thanks" today. Well, not really, I guess it's more of a "only if no one better comes along". Boo to them! 👎

Any other acceptances to stony out there?

Anyone who interview in late dec. or early Jan hear back already?

i interviewed in early december and got the dhl packet about a month later. the letter inside was dated 1/7/05.
