STOP calling it MCAT"S" there is NO "S" after MCAT

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
AHH I agree. It's NOT the "SAT's" or "PSAT's" or "USMLE's" or "LSAT's" or "GRE's" or "GMAT's" either... 😡

I'm just curious why this bothers people so much .... I know the proper way to refer to the MCAT and that's great. But I also don't care if someone else calls it the MCATs.

😕

And it's not the HIV virus, or the SALT treaty, or . . . I VERILY AM THE DIAMOND-CARBON TRUTH FROM ON HIGH -- ALL WILL ABIDE IN MY GRAMMER AS HAS BEEN FORETOLD BY THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL.

Haha, nice to see another grammar/spelling/word-usage Nazi out there.

This is unrelated, but I also get annoyed when people use the word "literally" in the wrong context (easily the most misused word in the English language). For example, "He literally did not know how to drive a car" "Literally" is not a synonym for "actually"; it refers to how words are interpreted.

And don't get me started on "Irregardless".... 🙂

i think posting an entire thread about it helps. thanks buddy, you really did us a favor.

Yeah, but your probably one of those really smart people who take the MCAT once and get a 30+.

Please realize that some of your less fortunate colleauges sometimes must retake the MCAT twice, thrice, and sometimes four times.

Hence we say, "My MCATs weren't too good"

my MCATs's weren't too well. 😀

though i must admit, the inappropriate apostrophe usage bothers me more than making something plural that shouldn't be plural.

Uh-huh. And you prescriptivists do realize that the Nazis lost the war? Literally.

Ha. I have always found that mildly noticeable. Its OK for people who don't know what it is, but for those of you preparing to take it, there is not an excuse. Besides, what if you have to discuss your 'MCATs' in your interview? Either they will assume you are an idiot, or they will assume you took the MCAT multiple times, because that is what you are implying by pluralizing the word.

it sounds waaaaay to hillbilly when pronouced with the S.

Billy Bob: "ya'll gonna be takins the mcats this summers? yee haw!"
Educated individual: "NO BILLY! I'm going not taking the mcatS this summer. go away."

And to further hack off this thread... "grammer" is spelled G-R-A-M-M-A-R !

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

BTW, what did y'all get on your SATs???

You lose all credibility in my mind when you demonstrate you can't spell.

Obviously, people are stealing away the 's' from Johns Hopkins and sticking it at the end of MCAT. Makes perfect "cents." 😉

ooh...you know what really bugs me?

When people call it the

MedCATs

Argh

are you serious? do people do that?

Ok, and for the USMLE... "boards" I guess is okay, but still nonspecific. I absolutely hate it when people call it "the step".

"i'm studying for... THE STEP"... some sort of crazy 80's dance craze??

hey at least people dont use Z's instead. i think that would really bother me

MCATz

MCATz

lol anyone that uses Z with MCAT should consider a change in career goals.

Let's say you were on the phone and about to say "MCAT Score" but the person on the other line hangs up right in the middle and all he/she heard was "MCATS--"
What do you do? What do you do?

And the one that makes me want to run screaming from the room (drum roll please):

"irregardless" instead of "regardless"

AGGGGH. :barf:

My mom calls it the MedCATs. But to be fair, she knows almost nothing about the MCAT except that her daughter scored really, really high on it. 😉

i guess MCATz is better than m-cizzle.

my dad likes to rearrange or make up new letters in acronyms just because he knows i'll laugh at it. like FAFSA (the student aid application)...he always calls it FASDA.
