Let's discuss ideas about how to position oneself to eventually ask for a LoR from science professors. Let's say the candidate's been out of school for over 5 years and works a full time day job M-F 9-5 (and that the professors normally teach in the daytime).

Personally I'd start by contacting them and explaining the situation. Offer to come for a meeting to talk about it (perhaps they might have a little time in the evening they could spare for you). See what their take is on whether they feel they could write a LOR or perhaps need more time to spend with you to refresh their memory. Go from there.

No in-depth strategy is needed. Email prof and set up meeting, bring transcript (& possibly syllabus) to verify performance in classes, have info on research projects/P.S. rough draft so that they have something to talk about in the letter.
