So I recently updated both Firefox and Quicktime, and I suspect one of these was the wrong move. Now, most streaming videos (including the vast majority of YouTube) don't work properly-- I get stuck at 'Loading', and nothing ever happens. I've double-checked, and Quicktime is the default player for most video file types, the plugin 7.2 is installed, but something is still going wrong. Any ideas?

That's the problem, Quicktime has stolen associations from other applications that it shouldn't have. You should try re-installing your flash and see if that fixes it.

Nope. And I was using Quicktime as a default player before, so I suspect it might have been a problem with the update of one or both.

EDIT: Perhaps I should try going back a version on each and see what happens.
EDIT#2: Same problem on IE, I'm starting to think more of a QT issue.

Did you try repairing or re-installing Quicktime from scratch? Sounds like a bad upgrade.

I reinstalled with no change. As it turns out though, my roommate doesn't have Quicktime, and has the same issue on his computer while on our home network (using Firefox). So my suspicion is that there's something ****ed up with our network, which quite frankly doesn't surprise me at all.

The thing that's been the oddest about all this is that whether a video works or not seems completely arbitrary. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what will play and what won't. However, once a video gets stuck, it never works right, even if I come back to it another time.

If directly connecting hard-wired to your modem doesn't resolve your problem (on either computer, try both to rule out any system specific issues) it could be your ISP and not your network. Some providers are using something known as "traffic shaping" these days and when they implement it there can be significant issues with certain kinds of media (VOIP. streaming video, etc...) because of the way the traffic shaping effects the data. Also, if direct connecting doesn't solve the problem (since it takes the network totally out of the equation) it could also be your NIT (Modem), when some modems start to die you can get erratic behavior, all manner of unexplainable things start happening. The next thing to try is swapping out your modem with a new one from your ISP.

It'd be tough to hard-wire to our modem, since it's located in the apartment upstairs. We split a bill with some friends of ours.

You should try playing the YouTube videos with Internet Explorer. If IE needs any plugins it will prompt you for them. When those plugins are installed the files will then overwrite the problematic ones.
