Hello everyone,

I am a medical student from austria with the intentions to do psychiatry after medical school. I am very interested especially in programs / universities with a very strong focus on neurobiological research approaches to psychiatry.

There is plenty of information here about top US psychiatry programs, but what are some institutions here in europe with an excellent reputation?

I am glad for any kind of input.

As Spilk says the maudsley/IOPPN rotation is best for research opportunities, and you'll have lectures from internationally renowned researchers almost on a daily basis. Clinically its nothing special - most of it it revolves around psychosis, its pretty biologically orieneted (although psychodynamic supervision for long cases is still good). For some people its an ideal clinical population - majority immigrant population, eocomically deprived, high rates substance misuse, lots of forensic type cases; for others its their worst nightmare. Lots of access to national specialist units aswell.

Competitiveness has increased significantly in recent years - >90% are UK graduates and obtaining a place on the maudsey scheme is by no means guaranteed even for strong UK graduates.

Thank you very much @xsw and @splik , this is very helpful for me!

Do you also know if any programs in switzerland (for instance zürich) or germany have a strong research reputation?
