I'm curious of how competitive student fellowships are at some DO schools. I'm sure most students go into med school trying to finish in 4 years but there are the new batches of student fellows.

Does your school need to actively recruit fellows beyond the usualy free tuition?

Does your school give any type of priority for clinical rotation sites for fellows?

are the fellows usually in the top 10% of the class?

when does the application process start for your school?

Just trying to learn more about student fellows. answer just one question or add anything else you wish. Any serious contribution is helpful. Thanks!

EDIT: umm nevermind. check ur pm.

At NYCOM, we have fellowships in OMM, Anatomy, Anatomy/Pathology, and Neuroscience.

In terms of recruiting, we don't do much in terms of major advertising, but when we think someone would make a good candidate, we do let them know that they should consider a particular fellowship.

The last date for applications was about a month ago.

I don't know about the grades of fellows.

If you want any more info, let me know.

Also, as of this year, an Academic fellowship.

academic fellowship = predoctoral fellowship. basically it's just restructured so that you apply for a general academic fellowship, and then in your app you specify what depts. you're interested in (path/anat/omm/neuro) and they try to match you.

I was under the impression that the NYCOM Academic Fellowship was designed for students who wanted to go into academic medicine...as in being a clinician who teaches.

yeah it's geared towards such students...

same benefits, app process as the OMM, anat, neuro, and path fellowships? Any idea why this is offered? Is this for exceptional students that did not get the into the programs already setup?

ok, forget about the separate depts for a second - the academic medicine fellowship is the UMBRELLA under which all the separate dept-specific fellowships fall (path/anat/omm/neuro), it's NOT another fellowship subtype alongside path/anat/omm/neuro. so you actually apply for the academic medicine fellowship program (a centralized app process), and then they place you into a dept - path/anat/omm/neuro according to the preferences you stated in your app. hope that's helps.

Ok this is the impression I got at Open House, vut now it's more clear.
