Study - Night Shift and Die 10 years early

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Night shift is OK as long as you still have a regular sleeping schedule EVERY DAY of the week (meaning, you sleep during the day on days off too), which normally doesn't happen.

Without establishing normal circadian rhythms, yes, your body is put under a lot of stress, and thus dies early.

Found this on UpToDate:

Shift work — Insomnia related to shift work is primarily found among individuals who work the night shift (ie, third shift). This includes approximately 20 percent of workers. Affected night shift workers are sleepy at work and while driving home in the morning, but have difficulty maintaining sleep past noon. The sleep problems can be resolved by transferring from the night shift or by adopting a daily sleep routine that is consistent seven days per week. Chronic insomnia may develop in individuals who work the night shift on either a rotating or permanent basis. This is discussed below.

I work night shift 7 on/7 off. I have absolutely no problems switching back my days and nights. I think it's because when I get home around 5am, it is still dark. I go to bed and get a full 6-7 hours of sleep. Right now, I'm off and I go to bed at 10pm and get up at 6am. No problems there either. I don't need to take anything for sleep at all.

If I were to decide to become a staff pharmacist, this is probably what I'd want to do. How long have you been oing this, if you don't mind me asking? Do you like it compared to the morning or afternoon shift?

Remember that not all people are exactly the same. This person might experience no problems at all while on a rotating shift, while some other people might experience insomnia or other symptoms.

Night Shifts Sponsor Cancer pay-out

The Danish government has begun paying compensation to women who have developed breast cancer after long spells working nights.

-snip-

The Danish authorities acted following a finding by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an arm of the UN's World Health Organisation. The IARC studies and ranks cancer risks.
Category One risks are known carcinogens such as asbestos. Night working now sits just one rung below that: a probable cause of cancer.
One of the reports, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, showed a 36% greater risk of breast cancer for women who had worked night shifts for more than 30 years, compared with women who had never worked nights.

I quit night shifts years ago, when I started feeling really really crummy the next day, and it turned out I was pregnant. I liked the night shifts because it's quiet, the phone doesn't ring much, and the bosses aren't around (and if you work retail, you get all the really interesting kooky people coming in, especially 2-5 am). But if the World Health Organization rates night shifts at just below asbestos for cancer risk, nobody should be doing these shifts exclusively, long-term.

Looks like "the graveyard shift" was a more apt moniker than we used to realize.

i thought there was a study somewhere that showed melatonin helped relieve a lot of the risk of bad outcomes

I think we should first investigate the reputation of the authors of this publication before discussing the content of the publication. Also, let's see some data so we can know how they determined that people are "dying 10 years early". We don't know if they pulled data from a tiny population or only from a certain area. Otherwise we are blowing hot air and becoming scared of something that may not have a strong argument to prove itself.

I honestly think that daylight shift is taking years off of my life. I'll nod off at 2, 230...get up at 545...do that **** 4 days a week and I just sleep all weekend. I just wish somebody out there would hire me to work straight afternoons. The good 'ol 1-11. Nobody wants the shift...I do...yet everyone that is hiring always has that damned rotating shift work crap...which is there because it spreads out all of the afternoon shifts that nobody wants...yet here I am...willing to take all of them with a damned smile.

I have the same sleep schedule as you Mike.

I think Dana is super lucky to have a shift that ends so early. I worked graveyards in a call center in undergrad. We got off at 5 or 530 and that was better for sleep schedules. My old hospital's graveyard shift ended at 7 or 9, I found it hard to deal with rushhour traffic when I was tired and crabby.

I work nights 7 on 7 off 8p-8a. It is so much less stressful I don't have to stand on my feet for 12 hours straight. I usually can chill for an hour or 2 a night. As long as you get 8 hours of sleep it's fine. I sleep in a pitch black room from 11a-7pm. Plus you can run errands in the morning because everything is open when u get off. It probably isn't good for your health but the stress might make up for it.

I work 7 on 7 off nightshift + 5 days overtime (daytime or filling gy) leaving me with 2 days off every 2 weeks >_<... 40 hours OT every 2 weeks is just too sweet to pass -.- I have no problem switching back and forth whatsoever
