Firstly, the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) is the Australian equivalent of the American MD degree.

Most Australian medical schools either run a 6 year undergraduate degree, or a 4 year post-grad degree (it doesn't matter what undergrad course you study); some medical schools also have both forms of entry. Most universities also have places reserved for full fee paying international students who compete only amongst themselves for a set number of places. You may want to check out the following links for more information about some of the international medical programmes at some Australian universities:

Hello All!

I just came across this site yesterday and I must say it's an absolute goldmine...the ultimate resource!

Anyways, I am starting my Senior Year of High School here in Vancouver and I am seriously planning on attending Med School outside of Canada. Namely, Australia.

I've considered the University of Glasgow, though being form Scotland, I really don't care much to go back and study there...I'm looking for something different. Vancouver and Scotland share some similar traits. I'm avoiding the US for many recurring reasons. I've also had an oppotunity arise in Melbourne which is why I'd be relocating there.

Now that you know a wee bit about me, here are my questions:

- I was hoping that someone could enlighten be on the requirements and programs necessary to enroll in an Australian Medical School. As well as explaining their programs and structure.

- Do I need 1 or 2 years of College or University prior to applying?

- What is the Bachelor of Medicne and Surgery degree and where does that get me? Does it Differ form an MD? Are the two related?

Would be most advantageous and highly recommended to establish a Permenant Residency in Australia prior to appliacation in thier Medical Program?

That's about all for now....
I thank you in advance for your time. If you (The reader) have anything to suggest or any additional information please don't hesitate to reply or e-mail me. I know I haven't covered much of what I absolutely need to know.

Cheers,
- Matthew Millar

I'm a highschool entry applicant and i started (2 years ago) my MBBS at the University of Tasmania. U do not require any previous degree for the following undergraduate medical programs in Australia:

Western Australia
James Cook
Melbourne
Monash (u can't even have a previous degree for this program)
Tasmania
Adelaide

The MBBS is equal to an MD when u get ur degree u can officially change it to an MD if u wish to practice in North America.

Okay getting a PR for u as a highschool student will be impossible unless u get ur parents to sponsor u. They can sponsor u until the age of 21. The advantage is u can potentially get local fees...but then ur level of competition may or maynot be more difficult...it depends on ur assessment. u will have to send all ur highschool marks to get assessed...

On the other hand if u apply for a PR after u have a spot in medicine then u are at the potential problem of not being guaranteed a local spot (and also losing ur international spot) but if u chose ur school correctly this may not be a problem. For example at my school there are always a spot or two free each year due to failure, differment etc. but i doubt this is the case at melbourne or monash.

cheers
