I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a premed club. My school doesn't have one and I was going to start one and I wanted to see if anyone could tell me some of the things that their club does, or maybe some things you wished it did, just to give me some ideas...

Thanks

I wished that my club had done something other than have its officers use their titles to pad their resumes. Everyone has premed clubs, they don't help you stand out.

Instead, if you're actually into the idea, and want to do something for your campus, you can organize group community service, or start a book club (not for reading medical journal articles, but actual books, medically related of course)

I wasn't doing it just to pad my resume. There are people at my school that don't have anything together. Don't know what classes they need or even where they can go to school. They just know they want to go to med school. I was hoping I could attempt to turn that around a little bit.

You should ask shemarty about this - she and I (but mostly she) organized a lot of programming for our school's premed association. Some examples:

- Mock interviews with faculty, physicians, and current med students
- Informational panels (with physicians and with med students)
- Mentoring programs (with faculty, physicians, and med students)
- Social mixer events (with other premeds and with med students)
- Research symposium
- Raffle for MCAT prep class

That's all that comes to mind at the moment... I actually think that an active and very organized premed association is very important.

does anyone have anything in their club that is similar to mcat tutoring? like getting professors to lead review? or even students? and if so, how useful is this?

I'm skeptical of this idea because MCAT review is kind of "go big or go home"... either review everything and give the students lots of practice, or don't both trying because they won't get much out of it. Just my opinion.

We have one and it has proven to be a huge help for all of us. We do the things you would expect... we have physicians, P.A's, admission faculty, school reps, etc come in and speak to us. We go over what's on the MCAT, what school life will be like, what we should be doing now to stay competitive, and so on.

You beat me to it, silverlining!

Check it out: premed.stanford.edu (our calendar is not updated for this year at all, haha. *embarrasing*)

For some reason the fact that we call it an "association" makes it sound more legit than "a pre-med club" 😛

How about a pre-med fight club?

That would probably be a good idea. It would look great as an EC lol. Fight until first blood and then everyone gets a head-start on med school as they learn to treat those they beat down lol.

Alpha Epsilon Delta......Google it.

I agree. Look this up. Our school's chapter is very active, and they provide great, medically-related, community service activities.

You know it would be impossible to get the word out, as no one is allowed to speak of it per the first rule. Lol

But seriously, AED is a great thing to get starting on campus. Our chapter holds MCAT practice tests on computers, lots of service activities, great speakers like ACOM members from various schools, and a chance to get to know our fellow "pre-medders."

If you want you can check out our site to see what ours is kind of like.

Our calendar like the stanford one is also not updated *also embarrassing*
