Im a third year student and seriously interested in EM. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to strengthen residency applications next year

One of the most crucial aspect of a strong application is a great performance on your EM rotation and securing a strong letter of recommendation.

So if you're interested in emergency, start gunning for it. Attend journal clubs at your base hospital, hang out with the emergency attendings on the weekends, read emergency medicine review books (Blueprints for EM is a fast read), etc. The more aware you are of how to treat the common problems in emergency medicine the better.

Also, consider joining SAEM (society for academic emergency medicine- www.saem.org) and ACEP (american college of emergency physicians). If you join ACEP as a student you get a subscription to annals of emergency medicine (one of the premiere EM journals) included in your membership.

These are a few suggestions. Keep in other specialties in mind this year too. Remember that since emergency medicine has such a broad scope of medical illness that knowlege you gain from each rotation will be practical for you future career.

Hope this helps.
