Summer Plans After First Year

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Party! Chill. And of course most definitely SLEEP! Pretty much gonna do anything I can to relax before the hell that is second year begins! I feel bad b/c everyone else is beefing up their resumes this summer, but oh well. Last free summer ever! 😱

I'm glad you feel that way! 🙂

I plan to sleep, workout, relax, and spend time with my family. I also plan to volunteer once a week at a clinic near my house.

😎

Well- I was either lucky or unlucky enough to get a summer research fellowship at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. So this summer I plan on hanging out in Santa Monica, taunting the Lakers fans, and well, enjoying the beautiful, if not plastic, scenery. Hope everyone is having a great summer and a much deserved vacation.
Ciao,
UC

Summer clinical preceptorship program at the Mayo Clinic. 🙂 I've never been to the midwest aside from Chicago and a Creighton interview in Omaha, so it should be interesting. I guess California will have to wait for an away rotation in med school!

Then it looks like I'll be coming back to Philly in July to do six weeks research (sigh). Oh well, it's NIH funded and I could really use the stipend, and my folks would come to visit. And I'll still have a week off before classes start, so I can go back home then or maybe to Puerto Rico.

But the #1 thing to accomplish this summer is finally getting my freaking drivers licence. 😳 😛 Wish me luck...

I'm mostly reintroducing myself to my husband and children. We'll take a driving vacation to Boston over July 4, other than that, just hanging out at the homestead by the pool, no doubt. I might even crack open a Step I review book.

Hey guys - how has first year been? I was hoping to get a 1-month psych fellowship but I didn't, so I'm a-travelling to Puerto Rico, 4 carribean islands, Cali (job), London, Switzerland then Spain (Exchange med program in Valladolid). I can't take being in the big apple for too much more.

I'd highly recommend doing anything BUT medicine. It's your last chance - the rest of your life will be medicine.

I went to Hawaii, surfed, learned some fun stuff about leprosy at the former leper colony on Molokai (ok, a little damn medicine got in there), learned to scuba dive, chased sea turtles. It was great.

I guess getting published will help with residencies, but other than that, you won't be doing yourself much of a favor by getting more experience in the medical field. I'd suggest attempting to make your life a little more interesting than the medical field allows it to me with your last free summer.

Unfortunately last summer I couldn't travel anywhere, but this summer I most definitely will! I will be going to Washington D.C. for a week and then to New York City for the following week. I've already got my plane tickets. I will not be thinking about medical school at all this summer. I can pretend to be a normal person for once.😉

First off, good to see you Foxy.

I'll be spending most of the summer in NJ/NYC with my fiance and some of my family. I'll be doing the 'Jersey shore' thing as much as possible. I might look into doing a little volunteer work as well, just to keep my mind slightly sharp. Plan on taking a little road trip to Chicago and maybe down to Austin as well. I get a good 8 weeks off and I am planning on taking really good care of myself. Lots of good food, good wine, quality family time, see some old friends, and lots of exercise i.e. basketball. My fiance is already in the know as far as me practicing physical exam skills goes. The only thing that she can't stand is the Babinski

I still have four more weeks to go. I can't believe that in one year from now I'll be half way through my first rotation. Pretty weird when you realize how quickly the time goes.

Wow. I guess I'm the gunner in this group. I'll be doing Orthopedic research at USC, while studying the cause of Melanoma every weekend possible. Also going to Magic mountian, Vegas, etc, etc.

Hey Jalby-
I am doing my research program thru USC also. Maybe I will see you around.

Going to Key west for 5 days at the end of the semester.

After that Im going to be working in the HIV lab I was a tech in for 2 yrs after undergrad as a tech again. It's boring but it pays well and I need the $$$ at this point :/

might go the jersey shore for a few days in august. thats it though

DF! You're back!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Research, research, research. Plus a little OR time with a surgeon where I will hopefully get to do stuff!

What the hell? Don't I get any love from my ex?😛 I'm getting slightly jealous over here. I remember not to long ago when your title was: Property of CANES2006. 😀

If your at childrens, you'll be about 5 miles from me. I'll be on campus at USC. Childrens is in the very eastern tip of Hollywood. Unless you mean womens and childrens hospital.

Ahhh. The good old days.

Oh yeah, I'll also be getting my freak on as much as possible over summer.

I guess I meant the same city (I knew that there were two different campuses, I swear!). I will be at CHLA on Sunset Blvd ,although I could have been placed in a lab at USC's main campus .

Got a summer internship with the CIA of the public health community... the EIS. Thankfully one of my friends this year hails from Atlanta and he's planning on just chilling with his family, so no worries about being a stranger in a strange land. Anyone else out there recently become a junior commisioned officer in the Public Health Service?

I think this thread is proof that SDN is not a good cross section of typical medical students. 😉 Everyone has research plans, work plans, etc. At my school, we only get 5 weeks off and some are doing paid research, some are going on a 3 week trip to Mexico to learn spanish, and the vast majority of us are doing....NOTHING. In my opinion, that's the only way to spend your summer. 😛

please see my previous post. i'll be joining you by the pool, keeping my frosted mug full of amber ale. and maybe while i put sunblock on my fiance's back i'll check for any macules, papules, equal bilateral expansion, egophany, etc - aside from that, relaxing.

Well, I'll be joining you guys in doing nothing, as of July anyway. Turns out the research stipend wasn't available. Probably just as well, at least I don't have to feel guilty about passing it up. 🙂 I do want research experience, just not so much now!

fyi lara,
i PM'ed you..did u plan on doing research at fccc?

I am giving myself 10 days of laziness then back to the financial services game. I am also treating myself to a gastric bypass on July 2!
