Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread ( SPUR, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN, LA etc.) 2018

Haven't heard back from Washington university St. Louis yet. Decisions were suppose to be released back in march 15

Whoever applied to the leadership alliance, this is for you:

Just spoke to Harvard on the phone. They said they’re still reviewing applications. Also, they said the deadline for them is April 15/16, so by then is when we should know. They said to be patient cause they’re busy with other stuff too and not to worry - I guess we all have to wait till that date to know if we got in or not. No point comparing to others.

P.S. they mentioned they accepted a few people but they said they’re still matching students to faculty.

I still haven't from Albert Einstein SURP or Scripps Research institute SURF? Has anyone heard back from them?
 
Did any apply UT health's MedSURP or MicroSURP program?

called the office and they will notify applicants by the end of next week. But this is for the california campus, so I'm not sure about the florida campus

One of my best friends got a decision and committed early this month to Scripps California campus.

Accepted to Penn SUMR yesterday which was my #1 choice for the summer and coincidentally my only acceptance for the summer. Talk about a crazy ride but I'm not complaining. :soexcited:

Unfortunately if you didn’t hear from them now that probably means you were not accepted:/ they are notorious for silent rejections but it might be because they get 1.5k apps for 45ish spots!
 
Lol I know I’ve asked this a few weeks ago but has anyone heard back from Stanford Amgen/SSRP since then? I know a bunch of people got acceptances and rejections in the past few weeks but I have yet to hear from them. I sent them an email 2 weeks ago and never received a response. I’m a little pressed for time because the deadline to apply for summer research funding at my university is approaching and stanford SSRP/amgen is really the only program I wanted because they offer a research topic that my university doesn’t have resources for.
 
Sooooo...it's the end of March. I haven't received any type of notification for my programs. I applied to the humanities (more specifically, English) and I understand that humanities are typically the last to be notified but I feel like I've been pretty much rejected at this point. I picked Brown, NYU, and Yale, respectively. Has anyone in the humanities received any type of notification?? Driving myself nuts over here.
 
I posted this in previous years, but thought it would again be relevant now that decisions are coming back

For all you guys struggling through this process: it will be okay. I remember reading all these posts back after my sophomore year when I applied to all these summer research programs. The result- I was rejected from every single one (all 10, and no top programs) and felt pretty crushed. Despite that, I used my summer to work on the MCAT, work a full time job at a restaurant, and do a little bit of clinical volunteering. While it was hard to see all these other people going off to these big things, you can still find other ways to show your passion and pursue your dreams. Find something you really love to do and you can still move toward what you want to do.

Skip to the end of my story-I ended up having a great MD/PhD application cycle. 20 apps, 14II, 12 interviews, 11 acceptances (including multiple to top 10 type programs I didn't even consider applying to for summer research) and am now a happy M2 at my first choice school (think top 3). I even was able to be in a position to turn down interview invites at schools that had previously rejected me for these type of summer programs. Your life (and pursuit of medicine/science) does not end with these rejections/acceptances.

I agree with Incomparable! The only major difference is one is through MGH and one is through BWH. From personal experience BWH was great because they really did a great job with the personal development activities which was a great balance to the research that you do. Rejected from Rockefeller University SURF today. This is the email:

"I regret to inform you that we are unable to admit you into the Program for this summer. This year we received 750 applications for the 25 positions available, making the selection process both competitive and difficult. While we are unable to award you a fellowship this year, your application did receive a high rating from our Admissions Committee. Since you are currently a sophomore, I would strongly encourage you to apply to the SURF program next year."

Do you guys think the high rating thing is accurate or do they just send that to everyone?

Has anyone heard from Scripps Florida? I got interview a while back by them but they havent send any notification.

News about Leadership alliance: Yale or Howard? anyone?

I just feel so discouraged and kind of hopeless because I feel like my applications never get accepted. I've always had pretty good stats but I always seem to fall short on the written portion (or maybe my LOR). I am upset that I suck at essay writing.

Could someone give me some tips in writing a stronger application not just for the summer research programs but just for future reference because I think I'm doing something very wrong. Is it because I don't have a life story that motivates me for research? Is it not enough that I am perplexed by the intricate molecular mechanisms that govern our everyday lives?

Is there a book that I should be reading that will help me write a much more interesting application?

I'll read your statement as well.

For what its worth, you may very well be strong applicant. However, there may not be any active projects in the areas you described in the statement. You can be an amazing applicant but if a program can't place you in a lab, they will take someone else. Sometimes applicants are not specific enough about that area they wish to study. You tend to see this more in students with little to no research experience. I've had a lot success getting into programs in the past and I'll gladly help any way I can.

Applied for anthropology. Nothing yet either. :( April 17 is the schools deadline so if we don’t know by then, we’re rej.
 
Feeling pretty demoralized now that I've been rejected from every program I applied to but still excited knowing I can eat tiramisu and work in the same lab I've been working in full time now! Might actually be a good thing since I know everyone, know the techniques within the lab, etc. At least, that's what I'll tell myself

I have been accepted to the STAR program a couple of weeks ago but turned down the offer (I have already committed to a different program).

Sometimes it’s better to stay in ur old lab , good chance to improve relationship with Professor , get great letter of rec , and possible publication !

Also, I've heard more than anything that longevity and depth of a research experience is way more valuable to med school adcoms. I'm sure that a summer research program from Harvard certainly looks amazing but when it comes down to it it wont look better than 2-3 year and some presentations and possibly publications at your home university.

I haven't. On March 14th I emailed the director and they said no decisions had been made yet, and they would notify those rejected/accepted around late March/early April.

yeah I think so too, although scripps has not given me a decision yet I talked to the office and they said I have not been paired with a PI, but that doesn't mean I am rejected. But honestly think they are going to reject me either today or tomorrow.

Oh I did not know that they do lab placements at admission already. That makes sense. Have they sent out rejections at all tho
