Anyone who is going to UB this August, feel free to write about anything in this thread.

I will post a e-mail to the list serve telling people about the website.

Have fun

It looks like we will be required to get a Palm M515. We will have to go through UB to get it, because they are going to make it compatible with UB systems and add on software.

The cost $429.

I'm guessing they don't want us to have a laptop

AK

How does the list serv thing work?

I can't seem to e-mail anybody on the list serv. Is it e-mail address specific.

Did everybody get their Oreintation Packet.
Looks like they have a lot planned for us.

Is anybody going to go to the Golf Tournament. It looks expensive but since we get lunch, greens fees, cart, and dinner its not a bad price.

Where are all the UB students! Hello? I can hear my voice echoing.

AK

i just completed 1st year at ub. overall, look foraward to being able to enjoy your medical school experience and have somewhat of a life outside of med school. welcome and congrats on behalf of the 2nd years!

and a note on the palm piolt thing . . . i didn't get one from them. i'm not going to. 429 bucks is too much. i suspect you won't use it too much. hold off. i bet you can get by with a handspring neo for about $100. well, that's what i got so i am going to have to make it work.

Hey Colorado

They say it (Palm M515) is required. Should I call up UB and ask them. Maybe I only need a generic one.

Thanks for the info.
I can't wait till start.
Have you ever worked out at the UB weight room? I wanted to know when I could get access. I hope I don't have to wait till oreintation.

Check out this link

<a href="http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/pda/" target="_blank">http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/pda/</a>

UB is requiring all incoming first years to purchase the bundle from UB Micro. It is a good deal when you consider you are getting a top of the line PDA, case, all software and support.

You will use it, even as a first year.

Regarding the palm pilot.

I have a Palm IIIC and was rather reluctant to dish out 400+ for a new palm. I called Mike from UB Micro center, and he explained to me that the IIIC will work fine. It's just that I'll have less memory (8 instead of 16) and the processor will not be as fast. In terms of software, it should run fine.

My understanding is that you will need a palm, so if you don't already own one then go ahead an buy that bundle from UB Micro.

I think that you can still get it cheaper by 30 bucks if you buy it on your own. Try doing a pricewatch on the item (www.pricewatch.com)

Just wanted to add that PALM OS is required so don't go out and get yourself a Pocket PC or Windows CE OS device. :)

El Tico

I was actually planning to get a Pocket PC over the summer. I'm glad UB decided to tell us before orientation.

Have you guys received your schedule to events. it looks like fun.
If anybody is in Buffalo and wants to get together before orientation, that would be cool.

AK

Do yourselves a favor and buy the palm from UB. OMC will configure the thing for you and take care of everything before you even get your hands on it, you pick it up from them all set up.

Forget saving 30 bucks, you'll learn during the 4 years of medical school that 30 bucks is nothing for good customer service and the avoidance of headaches.

Thanks Rads.

As soon as I come up with the money I will purchase it from them. Anyways if UB puts something on the network and your Plam isn't configured then you probably won't be able to download it.

I would rather not have the hassel. Less to worry about in Medical school sounds good to me.

Hi Adam! I am just testing out the site....I will be in Buffalo before orientation so if you would like to meet that would be fine with me. See you soon!

Hey Adam,

Since you're in/from Buffalo area. Why don't you give us some info of what's fun and what to avoid in the area. While I was visiting for housing weekend I liked the downtown area a lot -- especially the bars :) Thanks Adam!

El Tico

Hey Jones,

This is a lot better than e-mailing everybody on the list serve. Where are you planning to live?

I'm living with my parents in Williamsville.

Maybe I should throw a pool party for some of the incoming class. My parents have a in-ground pool with a diving board and slide. Who is interested?

AK

Chippewa and the elmwood strip is always a great time! I never really got out there much because I was 18 (under the drinking age) when i left Buffalo

But you can't miss this weekend's Taste of Buffalo. It is a blast. You get to sample food from like 200 vendors, live music and much more.

If you like outdoor theater then you can't miss Shakespeare in the Park (its the Nation's 2nd largest next to NYC)

The waterfront is also a great place to relax.

But you got to head up to Niagra Falls the Candaian side. That where the bars and casinos are. Its only 20 mins with good traffic to the border.

AK

If anybody is Polish, go to the Broadway market

We should all go up to Darien Lake (oops I mean Six Flags Darien Lake. Only 35-45 mins away.

If you like museums then go to the Albright Knox Art Gallery. Its right across from Delaware Park (thats where Shakespeare in the Park is held)

If you like running or just want to check out the people runing you canm run in Delaware Park or on the Amherst Bike Path (N. Forrest and Maple)

AK

Thanks for the great info Adam :)

I'm up for the Darien Lake trip. I should be up by the 8th of August. I already found a housemate :)

It should be fun!

Hi everyone,

I'll be a 1st year at UB too. I also went to undergrad at UB.

I'm so excited to start!

Hey guys. Finally got this thing working, so I thought I'd post a message. I am in Buffalo this summer (as I have been basically for the last 4 years, since I went to undergrad here as well). I'm up for meeting people before Orientation. I already know quite a few members of the incoming class, since loads of us are UB alumni, but I don't know the people posting on here at any rate!

6 Flags sounds cool - I don't actually do anything now, as I decided to avoid the headache of having a job this summer, so I can go whenever. Also, I live very close to Delaware Park (Shakespeare is about a 5-10 minute walk from my apt) so if you'd like to meet up to go to the park or anything, my teeny place is a fine place to meet first.

I don't really want to give out my phone number, since everyone and their brother will be able to see it on here, but my email is [email protected] if you want to talk about doing stuff before Orientation! Let me know!

-Emily

I was wondering were all the girls were. Hi Emily and mollycake. Good to have you aboard.
Emily how many UB undergrads are going to UB med. Get them to sign on to student doctor.

If you guys want to get in touch

[email protected]

I can't wait to start.

Emily have you seen Macbeth in the PArk yet.

Have a great 4th

AK

It was a link provided on the Compiled pictures of us thread.

Have a great night.

Hi everyone,

I will start my first year in UB this fall.
I am so excited and happy to see you guys.

Do you have any suggestion for housing?

Hi Doc Q

Are you gong to be at the picnic.

For Housing I would contact Susan Wiepert.
She has been sending e-mail about housing and apts

It is on the list serv

AK

I did not get the E-mail from the person yet.

I try to go to the picnic. I am waiting for the letter from the admission.

Thank you

First of all, congrats to all attending Buffalo next year. Great school...my cousin went there.

Also, for anyone having trouble finding housing...I am sure Doc Adam would be more than happy to rent out his garage!

Just kidding...good luck in school Adam. Keep in touch.

Hi Dr AdamK,

I will be there for the picnic .
I will go to Buffalo early Sat.

Could you recommend any inns or motels that are not expensive and close to Buffalo Univ. ?

Thank you

Doc Q ( bye the way what is your first name)

My Father uses this website.

www.hoteldiscount.com it is not like priceline.com and you do not need to book in advance.

So if a hotel comes up in the following areas they are within 5 mins to 10 mins to SUNY Buff
Amherst
Cheektowaga
Tonawanda

Do not take something in Hamburg
Downtown Buffalo
or Orchard Park

Second way is to call the following hotels on Maple Road or Millersport HWY these are 4 mins away from UB, just use the national websites to book or call them.

Red Roof Inn
Super 8
Residence Inn ( ask for the Entertainment rate it is a coupon book that you might have heard of use this # if they ask you 03704801272

I don't know the prioce range you are looking for.
If you have any questions, feel free to call me 716-308-8042

And if every hotel is booked or you can't afford it maybe I can work something out with my parents at there house ( I live there too)

AK

Hi Dr. AdamK,

I really appreciate your help.

My first name is Hang Kyu and I am a Korean.
Some of my freind call me Q for "Kyu" .

I am still waiting for the letter from admission after acceptance call.

Thank you for your information.

Thanx a lot, Doc AdamK for setting up this forum and all the precious information. I will also be a first year med student at UB and I can't wait to meet up with my fellow classmates!

I am coming from California, and I'll probably need a lot of advices from you guys who live in Buffalo to get situated. just wanna thank you guys ahead of time.

I just registered for the forum! let's keep the chat going!

-Cancerman

Hey Cancerman

I guess you are already loking forward to working in Roswell Park Cancer Insititute.

Are you coming to the Picnic on Sat.

What part of Cali

AK

Hey Doc AdamK,

What a great guess! I am certainly looking forward to begin my experience at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

I am from Southern California, and unfortunately, I would not be able to attend the picnic due to my fligh schedule. However, I hope you guys have a great time at the park, and see you guys at the orientation!

-Cancerman

I also won't be able to attend the picnic....i am going to visit my parents before i start school. But i'm looking forward to meeting all of you in 7 days. I'm actually getting very excited.

Also if anyone needs any advice about buffalo....i have been attending SUNY Buffalo for the past 7 years....I did my undergrad and grad work here.

knish

Hey Cancerman: (What is your first name)

Are you just buying everything here
When do you fly in

Knish: (What is your first name I didn't know if that is your last name
Where do your parents live. I thought they might be from Buffalo.

AK

Hey Doc AdamK,

My first name is Yen, which is my chinese first name. But I also go by Michael if you prefer.

I am flying on the 10th of August (a red eye flight), and will arrive at Buffalo in the morning of 11th. I have already had an apartment booked, but I still need to get some furnatures for my place in the afternoon.

...and yes, I would have to buy everything there. Do you know if there are car rental places at Buffalo, since my car probably won't reach Buffalo in time. And would you also be nice enough to tell me where to buy computer stuff too? thanx in advance!

-Cancerman

my name is PETE.....

I am looking forward to meeting all of you at orientation on monday....i think we should put something on our name tags to recognize the SDNers.....like SDN in the corner of our name tags...just an idea.....have a great picnic this weekend guys....

knish out

Yeah I don't mind putting my SDN name on my name tag, but I think you guys can pick me out.

Hey Cancerman, there are plenty of rental companies in the airport.

I get most of my computer stuff near the Boulevard Mall. Depending were you live just take Sheridan Dr. to NIagara Falls Blvd. and you will run into CompUSA Circut City and Media Play (if you need any software or games)

AK

Hey guys - don't forget about Best Buy further down Niagara Falls Blvd in the Target Plaza. You can also take Bailey Ave past the International Tops to get there. Best Buy is really awesome for electronics and computer stuff. They have DVDs cheaper than any of the retail stores in the area.

Good luck to you guys w/orientation and class. Sounds like Adam is taking good care of all your concerns. Remember, if you need dental work done (cleanings, fillings, BLEACHING, crowns, root canals, grandparents need dentures, ANYTHING), let me know - e-mail or PM. I'm a third year dental student over at the UB dental school and we'll take good care of your dental concerns over there. We are on South Campus two buildings over from the med school, so it's close by as well.

Hey Griffin:

What does the dental school charge for cleaning.
I saw that the Med Insurance now covers some dental at places like Aspen Dental.

AK

Hi Everyone,

Good to see you and I need help.
I will fly to Buffalo on Saturday morning but could not find place to stay for Saturday. I reserved a room in Travelodge near the south campus for sunday.

Any one has good suggestion?

Thank you

You tried all the hotels in the area?

That seems odd that you couldn't find something for Sat.

YOu don't have a lease yet?

AK

because I don't have a car, I need a reasonable place that is close to school. The travelodge is the closest one.

I did not have a lease yet.
