Hi,

I've decided to go to SUNY Stony Brook next year. I wanted to see who else is going and what you're doing for housing, car, etc.

Where did you go to undergrad?
Where are you from?
Why did you choose Stony Brook?

Thanks!

 I will be going to Stony Brook
I am so excited! I loved the school 😀

I go to Lehman College (CUNY)-grad. in May
I live in the Bronx
Because I loved it! (I did have more than one choice)

Are you going to answer your questions 🙂

I needed someone to ask me!

I go to Fordham U in the Bronx, graduating this May.
I'm from Long Island.
I liked the school, the research is great, the class is small, and the price is right!

I'll see you there!

Oops, I forgot to answer the first part of your post. I am going to move out by the school, I just have not made up my mind if I want to live in the dorms or off-campus. However, I am leaning for off because I have pets and I want to bring one of them with me (one of my dogs). I am married and my husband will be staying home in the Bronx. Do you know how difficult it is to find housing by the school? How about the range in apt. prices? I would prefer to live alone in a small 1 bedroom, but I would even live in a studio. I have not seriously looked into this yet, I thought maybe you could give me some input since your from LI. I have a car so that will be my transportation. What are your plans with housing? Even though I stated that I am most likely going to live off campus, I still sent money to SB for on-campus housing. I did that just in case..

From what I hear, the on campus living sucks; about half of the first-years live off-campus. Prices vary, but I understand that it's about $900/month for a single apt., and about $450/month if you share with someone.

Since I've had an apartment for the past 3 years, I can't go back to dorm life! I'll be sharing a place off-campus.

Roommate Wanted!! 😀

Hi, I will most likely be going to Stony Brook (either that or Rochester). I graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio in 2000. I?m originally from the DC area, but have been living in Buffalo. I will definetly be living off campus. I have a young dog that I am raising and there are no questions about his coming too! He?s the best!

I hope I can join you guys.

Right now I'm on the waitlist.
SB is my top choice

Hope soon I can tell you guys I got in
If I get in I will hold a huge BBQ for all you guys during orientation

Ken,

We should talk! I am in the midst of making the same decision right now(SB or Rochester). The price was a big factor, however, but i got my FA package from Rochester and am very pleased with it...so price is no longer so much of a factor. Why are you leaning towards SB, if I may ask?

talk to you soon..

Ken:

What part of Buffalo
I'm originally from Amherst.

Congrats on everyone who got accepted. I was wondering if one of you could help me out. I am applying EDP to Stony Brook, and I really wanted to ask some of the accepted people how Stony Brook evaluates disadvantaged students. I am not sure if i am even considered a disadvantaged student, but I did have to work during my first years of undergrad to pay the tuition (gpa was 3.2), but then i transferred to a state school and didnt need to work (gpa was 3.7). My overall amcas gpa is a 3.4, way below Stony Brooks standards. Is there anyone who is familiar with the EDP process for disadvantaged students.

Also, to the current students, is there anything about Stony Brook that makes it stand out from the rest. Anything unique ?

Thanks everyone.

Hi J.Pearlman,
I will send you a pm later regarding your question.

Hey!

What's up with all the PM's?

Tell us all what you know 🙂

hi guys! I'm still finishing up some post-bacc work, so I'm not applyiny yet.....
however, I went to SB for undergrad and also have some friends in SB med school. They all recommend off-campus housing--- pref. renting a house with other med students. You can get a great house, space, and yard for the pups for your money! I highly recommend this option myself.
good luck! You'll love SB med from everything I've heard! 😀

hi guys, just wanted to say hello to my future classmates. see you guys during pre-orientation.

barbecue sounds good...hope you get in. good luck.

Hi Guys!
Daisygirl, i couldn?t respond to your pm because i need to disable something in my profile to recieve the pm directly, but I will try to take care of that. After May 25th, if I choose SB, I will visit and look for housing that allows dogs. There are a couple listings (more expensive), but not many.

EW1779, I am in the same boat. Rochester and SB are offering me some money, so money isn?t really the consideration either. I think I like SB better because it is a more traditional curriculum and that means more time for self-study. But the current students at rochester love it there. Rochester is a more reputable school (#29) and SB isn?t in the top 50. I most likely want to specialize so this is a valid concern. But it will come down to performance in school and on the boards I guess. I also like the long island area better, but can deal with rochester too. What about you?

Doc, I live and work in Lackawanna, although I?m in Spain right now.
