I remember on MAY 15th 3 people got into SUNY UB.

Are you guys accepting or withdrawing,

Has anybody gotten in off the SB waitlist.

How about the Downstate?

I withdrew my acceptance from UB earlier this week. Just hold on a little longer. I think a lot of people are in my situation, ie. using UB as a backup in case the waitlists at better schools don't come through.

Where did you get into?

What did you like about UB and not like about it?

You must have gotten in somewhere else, so congrats.

Have a great day

I got pulled off the waitlist at Dartmouth.

I don't have anything against UB, it's just Dartmouth is a much better school, and I'll be paying out-of-state tuition anyway. I prefer a P/F grading system, as opposed to UB's Honors/High Pass/Pass/Low Pass/Fail. I did research at the School of Biomedical Sciences during undergrad and the facilities are very nice. I wish I got to see the students during my interview but it was during winter vacation. I know a couple of people in the medical school and they don't have good personalities.

I guess my major gripe is with the city of Buffalo. You don't know how much hassle it is to live in so much snow until you see it, but then it'll be too late. Try not to live near South Campus because it's not very safe.

IMO, UB Medical School is much better than Downstate and even Stony Brook.

I lived for 18 years about 5-10 mins from the campus.

But your right about the snow.

Congrats on Dartmouth.

That's a really great school from what I hear.

AK

I got in on 5/15. I accepted (for now), since it's my only acceptance. I'm still waiting to hear from three schools. Hopefully, that will happen soon. Good luck to you (to all of us!).

Stony brook isn't done even giving decisions about people who interviewed in march...I got some speal today on the phone about how march wasn't that long ago, and I was like, what? Schools are already full and some start orientation at the end of june/july and she stated to laugh and said she has been saying that all year....

AK: i still got stony brook waitlist...if i get in, i'll put in a good word for you instead  but i think those a$$holes will reject me first

I think Stony Brook will take the longest time and accept the fewest people off the waitlist.

The reason: It seems that everybody thinks Stony Brook is better than UB or Downstate so I think people will want to hold on too their spots.

brick
you are right about the snow and south campus. I almost got killed over there:(

too bad that my program is on south:( I get nervous sometimes leaving the library at midnight. You have to be careful.
But, from what I know it's a pretty good med school.

Hello,

I think we're all on the same boat still waiting to hear from the state schools to get back to us. I'm in a similar situation as ChemE, UB is my only acceptance.

Noeljan, why did you almost get killed? Is it because of the snow? if you don't mind elaborating a bit...

I also want to know from Brick and Noeljan, why you think UB is better than Stony? I also seem to think so, unfortunately my gf lives in the city and that tips my decision in favor to SB.

Thanks!

One gripe I have with Stony Brook is the lack of exposure to urban medicine, while at Buffalo you have ECMC. As a primary care school Stony Brook is much better than Buffalo, it's even #47 on the US News Rankings, tied with Columbia! I guess it all depends on what part of the state you live in. But I think UB is a better research school than SB.

So If I thought I wanted to go into
Oncology
Radiology
Nuclear Medicine
General Surgery

which would you choose, UB or SB

I really think UB wins out because of Roswell Park Cancer Institute

then choose SB.

What other areas is SB strong in?

Waitlisted at SUNY Stony Brook, the dean just called today (5/28) to offer a spot, which I declined.

CJT

cjt615:

Thanks! I think your the first person that I have heard being offered a spot by SB.

If anybody knows different, tell me.

Where are you going? good luck and congrats!

AK

Hey CJT,

Did you write them a letter of intent or doing extraordinary to show interest? I'm just wondering what their criteria area for ranking students since I know that grades don't play the largest factor for SUNYs.

Johne:

Did you write a letter of intent?
I didn't, but I wrote them a letter that told them SUNY SB was my top choice.

Johne, when did you get put on the waitlist.

AK

I think they just started pulling off the waitlist. I'm sure I wasn't #1 on the list or anything, but there should be lots more movement i'll bet.

I didn't write a letter of intent or anything, just sent back their pink "High Priority" waitlist form. I'm pretty sure that SUNY SB has only one waitlist that they call "High Priority".

Would have loved to go to SUNY SB because of the cost, its close to my family, and because its a great school, but I got into my #1 choice, Pitt Med, a few days ago from the waitlist and i'm going there.

I hope one of you guys gets that spot!

Good luck,

CJT

I just realized that my question above is kind of stupid. If CTJ wrote a letter of intent, he'd have a hard time declining the dean.

Anyway, Yes ADAM I did write a letter of intent to them and I was waitlisted as early as December. I have done significant work at their primary hospital, Winthrop, and had two well known faculty physicians place calls. I am also above average in both MCAT and GPA and EC's.
If there is a surefire candidate that has proven his interest in SB it's me and yet they are accepting people who are declining. Not that CTJ doesn't deserve the acceptance (I'm sure he's a great candidate and is going to an even better school), but I just don't understand what their priorities are.

Frustrated,
John

Johne:

Where else did you get accepted to or waitlisted at?

You must really want to go to SB. I would have a hard time deciding if UB and SB gave me a spot.

CJT: Congrats on Pitt, its a great school from what I hear.

AK

No acceptances.
Waiting on All SUNY's, Tufts, Vermont, NYMC.
Finch interview Thursday.

We'll see

Johne:

Really there still interviewing. Good Luck. I hear Finch is a nice school.

Where are you ranking all those schools.

I'm sure you'll get one of those waitlist spots.

AK

I've liked many things about each school and can see myself studying at any of them. However, I did write the intent letter to SB.
Thanks for the support.

Hello,

I know this is more or less a matter of speculation... but how much do you guys think SB's list will move this year? I called the office to update personal info, and was told that indeed the list just started to move yesterday.

I hope we all get in :)

El Tico

It seems to me that most people are favoring SB over UB and UB over upstate and downstate. So I think the people that are offered spots might take them.

So I think it will move less than the UB Upstate or Downsate waitlist.

AK

When people report that only 2 people got in off the waitlist.

Does that mean that only 2 people of ones offered a spot off the waitlist accepted.

OR Does it mean that they only called 2 people from the waitlist.

I think it is the former, not the latter.
