Yeah I realized my extra P...lol...I'm a *****...

Thanks.

Yeah...starting Upstate myself in the fall. I'm going to Binghamton...only choice I put down on the app :)

Was accepted to Upstate. Not 100% sure i'll be attending but wanted to say hello to my potential future classmates :)

I put 'prefer syracuse' - I only hope these choices do not work against us. I like the school and I really don't care where I go. I read through the options and still couldn't make a firm decision. C'mon why think about the future when the present is not sure?

Could anyone please answer these questions about Upstate:

Are you given printed notes prior to lecture?
Is there audio and/or video of the lectures online?
Is the Histology/Microanatomy available digitally or only through use of conventional microscope?
Lastly, how many hours of PBL are there throughout the week?

Thank you so much!:)

In order of your questions:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Both
4. Not much at all. The closest thing that comes to PBL that's regularly scheduled is the "Cases Course" which meets once a week in the first year and three times per week in the second year. Other than that, PBL is limited to sporadic clinical case sessions.

Hello guys.

Is anybody going to Binghampton?
At Syracuse for now, but more and more I think about it, I kinda want to change it to Binghampton.

Just like Lulu, not 100% sure i'll be attending but wanted to say hello to my potential future classmates.

I chose the Syracuse campus. My impression was that the Binghampton campus was more for those interested in Primary Care. I'm sure you can get that in Syracuse as well. I think that if you know you are interested in a specialty you might prefer Syracuse. Please correct me if this is a wrong assumption.

I chose Binghamton because I currently go here for undergrad, but have been regretting my decision. My G.F. is possibly attending SUNY Upstate for a Cell Bio Ph.D. program and I would much prefer to stay in Syracuse with her. Does anyone know what the deal is with switching if you can find someone who will switch places with you?

BTW, Binghamton not BinghamPton.

 Sorry for misspelling. Yes Binghamton.

I think I heard something like you can switch as long as you can find somebody. So if both of us end up going to Upstate, then I guess we can switch? It will be good for both of us.

Right from Upstate's student handbook:

"
Transfer between Syracuse and Binghamton
Campuses
At the time of your acceptance to Upstate, students are
assigned either to the Syracuse or to the Binghamton campus
for their clinical years. Those assignments are binding. However,
in the case of special hardship, in some years it is possible
to re-assign a few students to the opposite campus. You may
apply to transfer during January of your MS2 year, the decision
being rendered in the first week of February. Pick up a form from
the Student Affairs Office in Room 1223 Weiskotten Hall. The
probability of achieving a transfer depends on class size, the
number of students wishing to transfer in either direction, and
the justification for the transfer."

From a practical standpoint, switching between campuses is pretty variable each year. Last year, I think 2 people switched but the year before it was about 10 people. If you can find someone to switch with, it might help.

Has anyone received anything in the mail about the Second Visit Day?

Hey anyone else accepted to Upstate attending the Second Look Day?

Hello...current MSIII here just saying hello. Fell free to ask me any questions you have about Upstate. I am currently in the middle of my psych rotation at the Syracuse campus and leave for RMED in 3 weeks.

Since the Bing/'Cuse deal seems to be an issue on here, here's what I have to say (after 2 beers):

After two years at Syracuse, a lot of my classmates who had chosen Binghamton were having second thoughts about moving--more because they were settled, active in clubs up here, and didn't want to have to relocate. We had quite a few students from my class apply to change and stay in Syracuse, but only 2 requests were granted at first--one because a students fiancee couldn't find work in Binghamton and one because we have a student who is good at manipulating the system. This later changed such that 3 more students were allowed to stay on this campus, but I don't know the details. Anywho, the students who moved the Binghamton--even the ones who were a little reluctant--have all settled in and are having a decent time. From what I hear, you get a little more individualized attention in Binghamton at the expense of moving around and relocating. You leave your Syracuse friends, but from up here, we really don't see too much of each other anyway. Rumor has it that you also get a little more action in the OR and on rotations if you are that type of person in bing, but you see more Zebras at Upstate....and the Ob/Gyn rotation is, like, a million times better in Binghamton. You are also only really there for third year. 4th year you can take classes anywhere--even at other schools or out of the country.

Bottom line: there are some pros and cons to both campuses, but it's only for a year, so you will get the same thing out of either option.

Congrats to you on your acceptance!

Hey guys, there's a very good chance I'll be joining you this coming fall so just wanted to say hello. Any idea of average boards scores at SUNY?

Any idea of average boards scores at SUNY?

Generally the average at SUNY Upstate is relatively close to the national average--sometimes a little above, sometimes a little below, but pretty much on the money.

The failure rate varies by year and I think has been between zero and 10 students per year (i am half making this part up, but i think i remember hearing this).

Another random fact is that of the students that fail the exam the first time, 100% have passed the second time--at least up until my year. I think we still have a few stragglers, but nothing's been confirmed.

At the second look this past Friday they said that they have around a 96% pass rate for the USMLE Part I on the first try, and for the part II i believe it was a little lowere, around 94-95%.

Did anyone else on here go to the second look? Just wondering what everyone else thought :).

That could very well be true now. I was given a presentation as an MSI with the other stats and I know a few students my year failed twice--I think it's the first time that a student failed twice in Upstate history, but I could be wrong.

In general, the USMLE step 1 scores mirror the national average. We are given a subscription to Kaplan with our tuition, including lectures and study books, so you have good resources in addition to the cirriculum, but sometimes people need a little more than that.

Hey RugbyJC, and any other current students,
I was just wondering where everyone lives. I know that a lot of people who live off campus live in the two towers, their names escape me at the movement. Do you live there? If so do you recommend living there? I have been looking at the website orangehousing.com and have seen a lot of other apartments that look very nice and I was wondering if anyone knew which areas in Syracuse are better. In other words, what are the areas of the city that I should avoid. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hey guys
those of you who went to the 2nd look day, what did you think? I was going to go but had an emergency. Was there anything really important I missed? How many people were there?

The two towers are Jefferson and Madison. I know a number of my classmates that lived in Clark this year are looking into madison and other off-campus places. Some have said it is less expensive. Clark is basically dorm-suite living.

I live in the suburb of Liverpool, and it isn't a bad drive to school. Just enough time to begin enjoying the dunkin donuts coffee and wake up a bit and you're there.

Be aware, next year the parking situation for people that have to drive in will be challenging. They are in the process of building a new parking garage.

For OOS students, I heard that if you live on campus, you can't become NY resident. Is that true?

I heard otherwise. Can anyone clear this up?

Racerx, If you don't mind me asking, where in Liverpool do you live? I'm trying to find an apartment/townhouse complex that allows dogs and has garages... Thanks!

I dont know for sure, but my guess is that this might be true unless the schools housing is year round. I know most states require you to be renting a place to live in the state for the entire year. As a result, if you are only living in school housing for the school year that might look bad. This is just me guessing though. Personally I would call the school and they would tell you where you can find the list of requirements to qualify for in-state tuition. :) Good luck :)

I am pretty sure this is NOT true, but I can find out for sure. Someone PM me if I forget to post by end of next week.

I have lived in Clark since MS1 year, but ONLY because I am moving for RMED and didn't want to invest in furnature or deal with a move for only a year.

Most students seem to live in Madison and Jefferson and most are very happy at both. I live in Clark and have friends that live in Clark. The base rent is a little more, but it includes all untilities, cable, internet, and furnature, but you essentially are living in a dorm. Some rooms are like studio appartments, others are quads or dorm-style. Madison and Jefferson are ligitimate appartments or townhouses and all of the above are within walking distance. Note that Clark charges WAY TOO MUCH for parking at the moment.

I also have friends that have rented houses or apartments off campus and are also very satisfied. Be aware that the parking situation might suck next year, but I don't have details. Orangehousing.com and craigslist are both decent places to start this search if that's what you might prefer.

This is the second or third reference that I have heard to the parking situation changing next year. What will actually be changing? I actually brought parking up durring second look and no one mentioned anything. The reason that I am concerned is becuase I was planning on not living in the two towers and driving to school from an appartment/ house a little further away from campus. What has everyone heard?

The "Old Garage" is going to be torn down and there will be two new buildings replacing it, of which only one will be a garage. Additionally, the parking rates are probably going to go up again but I don't know by how much. The good news is that some of the other garages close to campus will let you buy a monthly pass but there isn't any group plan or anything that's been negotiated with them. Also, I think we should still have the "R" lot so if you don't mind walking or taking the shuttle, the outdoors parking should still be pretty cheap. There was a forum about the parking last week but I wasn't there so I can't tell you what, if any, developments have happened within the past week.

They are tearing down one of the parking garages that is immediately at the hospital and building another in it's place, but I don't know when it will be finished. This is set to start in April. Their temporary plan is to shuttle staff in from a distant location, but for all I know the new garage might be up by the time students get back or they might have spots reserved for students in a separate lot. If you are concerned, I would strongly recommend emailing one of the administrators/Deans to get a straight answer to this.

I have been parking on the street for the spring in spite of that I live in Clark because it's too damn expensive to park here. This is definitely a feasible option if you don't mind a 15 minute walk, but it seems to me that they would have to accomadate students somehow. I would actually be curious to know what the proposed solution is. One of my only real complaints (aside from the OB/gyn clerkship) is the parking situation. The garages are contracted out to an organization not affiliated with the university and they do not necessarily keep the student's best interest in mind when making their decisions.

At the last GSC meeting I attended, the parking situation was updated a bit.

The new parking garage is supposed to be completed in 18 months. (Remember though, this is a state school - state project. . .as such, I'd expect it to be behind schedule the week after the old garage is torn down.)

Currently, there is a tentative plan to continue using "R" lot (a short walk to the school) and have additional parking at Alliance stadium, with shuttle buses to and from the school. No word yet as to how late the shuttles will run, which becomes an issue for those staying late. The walk to "R" lot takes you toward a sketchy neighborhood, and there have been some issues. But, if you walk with someone (there is a campus escort if you request one), it should be fine.

That's as much as I know. YMMV

Thanks for the info everyone. That was very helpful. If i get a chance today Ill send an email to the school to see what they say. Ill let everyone know what their answer is. Thanks again:)

Hi guys,

I've kind of been lurking a little bit here, and figured I'd introduce myself. I've been accepted to Upstate, but, like some others here, I'm not 100% decided. Its my only acceptance so far, though, so its looking good that I'll be attending. :)

Just had a quick question:

One of my only real complaints (aside from the OB/gyn clerkship) is the parking situation.

Rugby, what is wrong with the OB/Gyn clerkship? Just wondering because it one of the areas I am very interested in.

YAY another person! Welcome AJB. I too an not 100% decided. However, every day it looks more and more like I will be going to Upstate. I have a few places to choose from, but the more I look at it the more I realize what a great deal it is, especially becuase I am in state :)

When you get to third year--no matter where you go to med school--you are going to really enjoy some clerkships and really not enjoy others. You also might find that some of your classmates might have the exact opposite opinion as you and part of this is because you will not all interact with the same residents and attendings and it is these interactions that often makes or breaks the experience.

The OB/gyn clerkship is very demanding on the Syracuse campus. My clerkship group kinda rubbed the faculty the wrong way from the very beginning, and although a lot of my classmates who are not interested in OB/gyn found it excessive too, other classmates got a lot out of it and enjoyed it. Also, a lot of the problems that some of us had for the clinical part were the result of not liking a lot of the chief residents and 3rd years--all of who will be gone by the time you are there. Some of them are completely obnoxious and this is the only clerkship where I really felt med student abuse was obvious.

To be a little more specific, some of the reason why we felt this was excessive was because we had to give a formal presentation, write a 20 page research paper on an obscure topic and the call schedule was pretty bad--you have over night call for OB gyn surgery can keep you there late too.

This is probably a lot better than the typical clerkship at other schools, but it was not my favorite here. I can tell you that the current intern class is awesome, as are a lot of the second years, so the residents you will be interacting with are probably going to be a lot better than the ones I did. The intern class also ALL went to Upstate, so they clearly didn't have experiences that were as bad as mine. I also think its different on the binghamton campus.

Any more questions about this?

Received mine a couple days ago. ALL loans...scary. Have you researched the different lenders yet? Any stand out?

received a very very very small amount of scholarship money. very small.

hey guys

I recieved all loans. I had been hoping for a small scholarship, but wasn't shocked when I didnt get any. :)

I started looking at some of the options for lenders. finaid.com had alot of very usefull information. They have everything from loan repayment calculators to a chart which compares all of the loans.

Let me know what you guys decide with regard to the loans. :)

Also, does anyone know if we can get our loans through a company that is not listed on their website under Prefered or Acceptable Lenders?

Yeah you can get your loans through any company you want but it seems like the ones the school listed are the most trustworthy, and the federal guidelines are the same for all Stafford loans anyways (but the companies offer different incentives- I think I'm going with Citibank for my Stafford loans). I think if you go through a company not listed on the site you will have to do it completely independently (application, amount, all that stuff).

Hey Everyone,

I'll be attending Upstate this Fall and plan to stay in the 'Cuse all four years. I'm from the area and will be living off campus near the corner of E. Genny and Comstock with another local Upstate student. It looks like we may have an extra room in our apartment, although it's not for sure yet. Anyone that's interested or has any relatively short questions about the Syracuse area (and are definitely attending Upstate) feel free to PM me.

-Nate

Is the Setnor Building open yet??? Will the standardized patients and clinical training skills be a part of our curriculum next year?
