How long are residencies for surgeons? Do they do 5 years of general surgery, and more for w/e field they want? I am confused on this. Much thanks.

Depends on the place.

Minimum of 5 years, some places do 6 or 7 for GS.
And yes, and subspecialty fellowships add time.

Integrated surgery residencies are different though.

There are some surgical specialties with their own residency that don't require a complete GS residency first. These include Ortho, ENT, Urology, Ophtho. These generally require one year of GS before residency training in the field.
