How difficult is it to continue as a categorical peds resident if you only matched into and completed a prelim year in pediatrics (with no PGY-2 match in another field)? Are most residents in this situation able stay at the same program or do they have to take any PGY-2 position they can get? Any funding issues? Would this arrangement have to be done outside the match? I'm assuming the one year of prelim peds would count towards the three years of pediatrics residency, right? Thanks for any insight.
