TA letters of recommendation?

I was googling stuff about tips for getting into med school and under a section about letter of recommendations, one suggestion was if you were close with your TA in a science class, your TA can write the letter and have your professor co-sign the letter.

Is this true? Has anyone done this?

I've done it. I had a TA I worked really well with in a class that I excelled at. The professor was very aloof and my TA was actually far more involved in our class education/class experience. my TA wrote the letter and he had it cosigned.

It hasn't really been a problem in my app--nobody's asked me about it for interviews, etc.
