Most posts about taking a year off are for post-ugrad, pre-med school, and the rest of the posters wondering about taking time off during undergrad work are in very different situations than me so:

My wife and I are looking into summer volunteering, and she found an established, reputable non-profit orphanage that works within the Navajo community. The thing is, the more we find out, the better it sounds (as far as our interest in what the organization does for orphaned kids) and to top it off we just found out that what there will most likely be a one-year position open after this summer.

So, if I took a year off to do this, what is the general SDN consensus as this potential time off would pertain to my future med school application? Here is some info that may help with your opinion:

I don't want to do this for the sake of volunteer hours; I have many years worth of volunteering from the military. I am half Navajo and a registered member of the tribe, and have a huge conviction to help these people because of how bad off most of the reservation is. My original decision to pursue a medical education was actually so I could go back and help these people out...most of the reservation is desolate and third-world-esque. I'm only 3 semesters into my undergrad work, grades are great. I figured that while volunteering at this place for a full year, I could also put my Red Cross instructor certs to use and further help the nearby communities, churches, etc by volunteering at the local office when they don't need me (my wife would be doing much of the female-only work that comes with the position).

The situation is good, because I am looking at transferring out of my university anyways, but just found out today (less than a week 'til deadlines) that a handful of rec letters didn't get sent out, plus I am not taking any year-long courses this semester.

I much appreciate any constructive feedback.

If it is something you care about and you have the ability to positively influence other people's lives, I can't think of a reason why it would be a bad idea.

If you felt so strongly about it, then you wouldn't even be posting here for random internet opinions...You're either doing it for your application or for the attention. (Just like the poster who made 2 threads about deferring).

Are you asking if this would hurt your application somehow? Most programs like to hear about experiences that you're passionate about and this sounds noble so don't see where you think you might go wrong.

Will you be close to a casino? It's important.

Is it within the Navajo Nation? You do realize that they are a dry nation, so no beer:scared:

All joking aside, it sounds like a wonderful opportunity, something that you are passionate about and would mesh in well with your long term goals regardless of how much it will help with med school admissions. Additional plus is the WAF (wife acceptance factor), very important.

The only thing that I would be worried about is taking time off in the middle of school. It seems like it never works out the way you plan it and may delay or even derail your medical school plans. As long as you can accept that I don't see why anything would keep you back.

The organization works with the NN, which is whom I am registered with.

That was the essence of my question; whether or not taking time off in the middle of udnergrad work to do this would hurt my application. I'm pretty sure schools like Loma Linda would be receptive, as 7th Day Adventists are very missions-oriented, but I'm not so sure I want to put all my eggs in their basket.

No taking time off during undergrad won't hurt you. Med schools will not look at your application and say, "oh DAMN he took a whole year off helping orphans at a reservation in the middle of undergrad. This guy is clearly not doctor material."

Use some common sense bro, it will take you far. And best of luck helping those kids out at the reservation!
