Just finished 2nd year and have yet to take step 1. I am really interested in the field of PMR, but really just want to take time off as I feel I am too exhausted from this long path and just need a break. I don't want to just go through the motions during rotations and jeopardize my learning, and also want to fully focus on step 1 before I move on.

As applying to a PMR residency, will taking a year off affect my chances in matching? I am willing to go into any PMR residency, it doesn't have to be a top-notch one, just a DO residency in PMR. Is this competitive?

I plan on doing some research in my time off also, not just sit at home. Hoping to land a research opportunity in PMR to really make my resume well..

In the first two years, I failed one class. I do not know how this will count against me in PMR, please let me know as much as you can. thank you!
